The lickers, the ooze, the Medusa-like Uroboros and the invasive Duvalia all played on the themes of bodily transgression and oral sexuality that Giger explored. The character is closer to a robot than a living creature, though the slime it exudes appears unbearably biological – and is used to immobilise victims, much like a spiders’ web. Aside from the Alien movies, Giger has worked on numerous films including Dune, Poltergeist II, Species, and others. This particular image was the basis of the Xenomorph design – a monstrous extraterrestrial humanoid known from the Alien movie series. The nightmarish, industrial installations are then a metaphor of an unknown, terrifying environment we enter during birth. The two titles received mixed reviews at the time, though they are notable in their use of high-resolution visuals (which the artist insisted on) and the bizarre appearance of the lead designer in the lead protagonist role. The nightmarish fusion of human bodies with complex machinery – pipes, wires, pistons – is the main theme of the works in Necronomicon.There are also some hilarious smaller works featuring mutants, often getting up to mischief, which demonstrate a playful side from his younger days. Contrary to the title and the book cover, references to the occult do not dominate the contents of Necronomicon.

P. Lovecraft’s writing in which an early-medieval grimoire of the same name can be found; it is a madness-inducing culture book full of forbidden knowledge – as an aside, Lovecraft had to explain that he had invented the tome on numerous occasions.Although there is an emphasis on his later work for most of the book, there are some wonderful pieces from his earlier years that are primarily created with ink and traditional techniques, as opposed to his later airbrush work. Through Alien, he sent designers and gamers scuttling to the library to look up Kleinian and Lacanian preoedipal mothers and Barbara Creed's monstrous feminine.
