About this deal

Which is ironic, as she actually did murder six people as part of a cunningly executed revenge scheme. Grace Bernard is in Limehouse Prison serving a sentence for a crime she didn’t commit but that doesn’t mean to say she hasn’t committed some! I enjoyed the journal form, even though it made very little sense to me why Grace should ever want to commit to paper a full account of every murder she committed and so far got away with.

We are disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising. Her first book, Jog On: How Running Saved My Life, was a Sunday Times bestseller which bravely chronicled her battle with anxiety and her discovery of how exercise could help lift her from the deep-rooted mental and personal problems she ended her twenties with. I relate to Grace more than I should probably admit, this is my favourite word for that very reason! It is difficult because I loved the concept and irony of her being imprisoned for the one murder she didn't commit yet this part of the plot fell very flat for me. We’re obviously meant to be enthralled by Grace and impressed by her devious deeds, but she’s just completely detestable.Ironic twists and caustic commentary on everything from liberal guilt to the consumerist con that is “self-care” sharpen a debut novel that may lack the subtlety of the classic film, but delivers an antiheroine able to best villainous male protagonists such as Patrick Bateman any day.

The story started to drag from very early on, and I almost started to feel like reading this book was a chore. His willingness to punish a girl for not immediately embracing a photo of his dick, and I say that as someone who has killed five people. The main character was so utterly unlikable that I resented spending the length of the book in her company. The only thing is Grace is guilty, guilty of killing 6 members of her estranged family, murders she has got clean away with.

I’m get the impression the author was trying to be funny, in a darkly humourous way, and didn’t pull it off.

Bella Mackie, daughter of former Guardian editor and Principal of Lady Margaret Hall, Alan Rusbridger, is a journalist who has written for VOGUE, The Guardian, VICE and GQ, to name but a few.Again, this may be a failing of mine rather than the author’s; we all know sociopaths are incredibly arrogant, and Grace clearly believes she is the only human being fully worthy of the title, so perhaps it really wouldn’t register with a narcissist like her what an incredible risk she was taking. But on the other hand, it is also a book about how the cards are stacked and how terribly men behave in so many different ways – there’s sexual harassment, there’s bullying, there’s a lot going on there. I got used to it and I can see that it was an interpretation of Grace’s character but I was irritated by the way the narration ignored the rhythm of the text and sometimes buried punchlines. It’s about family, it’s about class and the patriarchy – structures and systems that Grace is subverting. A lot of it was unnecessary as the novel is meant to be about Grace’s revenge against her relatives.

It’s absolutely Kind Hearts and Coronets down to the list on the back of the picture but didn’t see this mentioned in other reviews. Following her mother’s death, teenaged Grace vowed revenge, and this book is her prison diary, detailing how she planned and executed each murder and how and why she ended up in prison unjustly.Surprisingly, even though I was privy to all of the grisly details of Grace's horrific crimes, I never stopped rooting for her. Grace is not an angel, and this may sound terrible, but I really liked her and rooted for her the whole time. It felt like at some points, there were lots of needless bits of writing which could have been edited out.
