About this deal

As we read he moves the scene at just the right pace so that we remain immersed in the landscape as he introduces us to his very believable characters. The experience of Jonathan and his mother was strikingly similar to the experience of our wonderful client Sophie. I have been following his blog for a couple of years now, and never cease to be amazed at his insights and perception. Initially labelled as PMLD, Jonathan’s account of life in the classroom of a special school rings all too true. It is a very powerful story, of a young boy locked within a disabled body and how, with the help of his mother in particular, discovers a way to communicate and to tell of his amazing achievement.

He found himself in the strange position of comforting parishioners about what had happened to his own son.

Vineyard Churches UK and Ireland is a Charitable Company limited by guarantee registered in England and Wales under Company No. This is the incredible and moving true story of a child who is locked in and his struggle to communicate with the world.

If I can ever manage to unlock even a hint of what he wants me to know then I am most definitely winning. In part, the book is a testament also to his mother’s patience and steady convictions in her son’s abilities. Each word in this review seems somehow more important to take care over, to choose wisely, as a result. He shares his personal thoughts on teaching methods and explains why he has started his campaign Teach me too. And that has helped me have some kind of insights into what it might be like for people dealing with particular tragedies or struggles in their own lives. Immersing myself in a story is the most enjoyable, wonderful escapism; books have nourished my mind and prevented mental decay during my years of silence. Jonathan has a gift with words to communicate an important message of the importance to teach ALL children regardless of their disability.

Jonathan’s complex health needs mean that he is never alone, and yet he was very alone in his locked-in world that had a window on the outside world, but no way to communicate with that outside world.

He wrote his story using his eyes through a laborious but highly effective system that he learned with the help of his Mum and his carers. The long introduction was written by Chantal Bryan, Jonathan’s mother, and it begins with the harrowing sentence: “Before Jonathan was born, Christopher and I had a feeling that something was wrong. Inside you disappear to magical places, but most of the time remain imprisoned within the isolation. The list of life-threatening difficulties he has endured is shockingly long, as is the number of medical interventions and trips to hospital he had needed. His faith, his intelligence and his love for others all shine out of the pages of this short book which should be read by all!
