About this deal

The thing is though, even the biggest, dumbest horror comedy should be well-written but when it isn’t, you can tell and this serves as an object lesson in this. It’s an often frustrating experience, because Banks has experience in both comedy ( Wet Hot American Summer) and horror ( Brightburn) and even a successful horror comedy ( Slither) and yet tonally this is all over the place. Ordinarily, the lack of a 4K Ultra HD release for a new title like Cocaine Bear would be a disappointment, especially considering the fact that it appears to have been produced as a 4K DI.

Audio Commentary - Elizabeth Banks and producer Max Handelman talk about the movie, bringing it to life, the origins, casting, comedy, and gore. The film adds a ton of different characters and storylines that all converge in the forest, meeting this unhinged mammal. It’s a gorgeous colour palette and overall aesthetic that further enhances the heightened reality of the film.

The characters have enough of their own beats and arcs to strangely grow on us – beleaguered cop Isiah Whitlock Jnr’s pining for his little dog really shouldn’t warm the cockles but it does – and so when everyone heads home as the wonderful early morning sun rises over the stunning County Wicklow (doubling nicely for a very American National Park) scenery, it feels scruffily charming.

Thornton II, a particularly colorful character who had earned a Purple Heart during the Sixties as a paratrooper in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, before eventually became a member of the Lexington Police Department’s narcotics squad during the Seventies. Keri Russell, O Shea Jackson, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Ray Liotta all play the blandest of archetypes – when Ray Liotta is forgettable in a role, you’ve gone wrong somewhere. Either way, paying a premium for the premium release should get you the premium formats available for both sound and vision. However the image’s defining characteristic – and one noticeable from having seen an SDR version of the film digitally just a few weeks ago – is the massively high contrast colour grade the HDR pass further enhances.

This release also comes bundled with a DVD version of the movie and comes packaged with a slipcover and an insert with a code that can be redeemed for a digital HD version of the movie. Those interested in bringing that blood-soaked, drug-fueled chaos home, we have some good news on that front as Universal has announced release dates for the film on both Peacock and Blu-ray/DVD for lovers of physical media out there. Christian Convery, of Sweet Tooth fame, and Brooklynn Prince are fairly amusing in their respective roles and Kari Russell, who plays things mostly straight, is fine in her part. The blood is an epic red that spurts in many places and the black levels of the bear and the darker scenes look inky and rich. It’s not all bad though, the bear effects are impressive, and when you watch the film from the bear’s point of view it’s even more appealing.

Opening strongly with a dart through its swollen cast, we meet all manner of seemingly cardboard cut-out stereotypes – from the strong but struggling single mother (Keri Russell) to the dealer with a broken heart (Alden Ehrenreich), on to the park ranger with delusions of grandeur (Margo Martindale) and even a handful of spunky and way too old for their years kids (Brooklyn Prince and Christian Convery). A few weeks after Thornton’s body was discovered, a single-engine plane owned by Atlanta real estate developer David “Cowboy” Williams crashed, killing Williams, the pilot, and 15 other skydivers. From here, the dialogue is met with ample noises from the forest such as birds, insects, trees rustling, and more in the surround speakers. The bear’s body is currently on display at the Kentucky for Kentucky Fun Mall in Lexington, an ignominious end for an inadvertent victim of the war on drugs. Things kick off right away with that famous song, Jane by Starship, from Wet Hot American Summer(a part of Banks' past) that leads into a sequence high in the sky with a coked-out person throwing bags of drugs out the airplane door. The Blu-ray from Universal looks and sounds very good and there are some marginally interesting extras on the disc as well, making this a pretty well-rounded package for those who may feel the need to add this to their home video library.

who has just picked up a new trophy dog, is hoping to beat Syd at his own game with help from his new partner, Reba (Ayoola Smart). It's certainly not for all audiences, but for those to whom the title beckons, it should prove to be a riot of a time at the movies.mix is effective enough on its own, with plenty of surround engagement at all times, and there’s some prominent deep bass when it’s appropriate. a rich, lush image that just misses out on the very top tier of fine detail, but remains overall a simply gorgeous picture.
