In this 2007 novel, Sarah Hall explores questions that I imagine are on a lot of people’s minds today. But as the story shifts from anxious flight to defiant confrontation and the narrative fractures into brief vignettes of the inevitable fall, hints of a future forged from stubborn resistance can be glimpsed through the gaps.

She simply gave us the power to remake ourselves into those inviolable creatures the God of Equality had intended us to be.

Just as she gives her central character no name, so Hall allows the reader no chance to identify with her emotionally. The casual brutality of Sarah Hall’s faceless Authority, the grey despair of the browbeaten citizens seemed reassuringly remote in 2007.

In a side note about nature the use of gorse reminded me of a childhood favourite The Silver Branch (view spoiler) [ but that could be a false memory as maybe they use Broom (planta genista) in that story (view spoiler) [ forgive me, I am London born they are all just plants with yellow flowers to me! A dark cloud hovers over the horizon and the women of Carhullan have to decide how to handle the threat. Both works feature the rise of an authoritarian (in V explicitly Fascist) government in England, in response to disaster. Bampton is a small village resting within the Lowther valley and within striking distance of the River Lowether. To the right of the projecting range there is a lean-to outshut with a single mullioned window and a two-light mullioned stair window.As time passes, however the community comes to reconsider its relationship with the outside world and the Authority that governs it. Unlike most recent dystopias I’ve read, however, this book is not so much about individual destiny or quest, or about the importance of dreams and desires. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
