Dass John Sutherland "klassische" Literatur mit Leichtigkeit angeht und dennoch ernst nimmt, zeigte sich schon an seinen älteren Werken z. For example, his treatment of Mrs Gaskell's description of Charlotte's visit to a phrenologist in London . It made me smile and happy to realise that although cut short they tried to live their lives to the best. The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal.

However, this book showed me the good elements, like their love of animals and the little things in life. This short book by a authority in the field, is an accurate, witty, enthralling addition to the ever growing industry of Brontë literacy criticism. We also get an interesting alternative view of the character of Anne, judging from her insistence on going to Scarborough, where of course she died. Sutherland also points out other oddities such as farmer Earnshaw's 60 mile journey to Liverpool on foot, and at harvest time.

Deshalb ist es besonders schade, dass Sutherland so ein paar kleine Dinge doch anscheinend noch nicht recherchiert hat, z. A poor condition book can still make a good reading copy but is generally not collectible unless the item is very scarce.

I did realise a lot of it was Sutherlands’s opinions and some of them to be honest were rather sexist but considering he was thinking in Victorian terms I will forgive him, just this once. With his reputation for intensely close reading of Victorian literature, John Sutherland explores the Brontes' lives, their characters, their novels and poems, and the ways in which we interpret them today - and above all he digs out those unexpected nuggets of fact that illuminate their perennially popular works. I particularly liked his advocation to future students of Charlotte Brontë to take the more radical and revisionist approach of addressing seriously the view that her work is predicated on her religious beliefs with perhaps a religious motive rather than persist with a more secularising critique.

I really liked how the book was laid out and that it was short snippets of information which were easy to digest and engaging. Did Charlotte Bronte take opium Did the Reverend Bronte carry a loaded pistol What, precisely, does 'wuthering' mean Distinguished literary critic John Sutherland explores these questions and more to reveal the complete world of the Brontes. Zudem bedient sich Sutherland überwiegend aus aktuelleren Quellen, kaut nur wenig "altes Zeug" nach, das heute als fragwürdig gilt, und wenn, dann mit einem ironischen Unterton.
