If you’re still unsure which model to choose, you may want to read some reviews to help you make an informed decision. Update July 2012 - the machine is still going strong but I have just replaced the tines (prongs) for the first time and it is raking out moss just like new. There is no level indicator or vision window on the Bosch AVR 1100 so it can be little difficult to know when the collection box is full. The bolts and wing nuts supplied should do the job, however, one of the bolts is too short and none of the wing nuts supplied would pick up the thread.Firstly, before I dive deep into what I like about it and its faults, yes, it does have a few, but would say for small lawns, it is probably one of the best, if not the best electric scarifier currently on the market and it does a fantastic job at removing all that thatch and moss. Update November 2014 - I fitted a second set of replacement tines ready for the Autumn and I am pleased to report that the machine is still going strong and working as effectively as ever. The wire tines remove a considerable amount of debris from the lawn and you need to be prepared to dispose of plenty of moss and thatch after use. I tend to remove weeds individually now rather than using chemicals as I am not happy with the chemicals used in proprietary products any more.

Just make sure you don’t set it at the shortest setting from the start when the lawn has significant growth, instead start at a much higher setting and gradually work your way down. The great thing about a lawn rake is, they take the back breaking work out of scarifying your lawn by hand and getting it looking great in autumn and spring. Removing this moss and thatch gives the grass chance to grow and lets nutrients and oxygen reach the roots. I went over once with the petrol rotary mower but as the leaves were wet quite a few remained and became compacted into the lawn.

If you cut the lawn short then the settings on the front wheels come into play and then you can rake or scarify right down to setting number 1 and even leave grooves in the ground to re-seed.
