Little Whispers is an exquisitely designed, immaculately styled, grown-up retreat – annexed to, but separate from, the owners’ home in the quintessential South Downs village of Lodsworth. Chichester and Arundel are each about half an hour away, and beyond both lies the coast – so a day trip to the beach is well within reach.

Please note that the owners have teenage children of their own who you may see playing in the garden from time to time. They’re expecting a kid; the small village of Avoncote is as charming as the cottage they bought, and the widow who lives next door looks so nice – right? Jack and Mrs Barley think she's exhausted after having a baby and her mind is playing tricks on her. This large seating area has two leather sofas, a DVD player, digital channels and iPod docking station so you can really unwind on your holiday. On the ground floor you’ll find double and twin-sized bedrooms, along with a family bathroom with a shower and separate bath – so you won’t have to queue in the morning to freshen up.We had a glorious few days at Little Whispers, Lodsworth and it’s got to be one of the nicest cottages we’ve stayed in. I loved the gradual ramping up of tension, the way the author left me hanging as normal life resumed, the oddities seemingly swept under the carpet by Jack's logic, but lingering like ghostly presences.

Blakeney and its surrounding area are renowned for their awe-inspiring natural beauty, miles of untouched beaches and nature reserves rich with birds and wildlife. We're in the narrator's head most of the time and for long stretches in the beginning, not a lot happens. it really brought me back to weird, secretive (or just downright mean) stuff that went on in my little hometown. This revealed evidence of a single rubbish pit, dated to the mid 17th/early 18th century and may be a rubbish pit associated with the house.Whisper Cottage is a domestic thriller about Stina and Jack, a young couple who are desperate to leave the rat race that is Birmingham. And yet still she was the only one to attest to the sighting with no one else having seen the elusive man. Then there are the noises in the night, the sounds coming from the attic, the strange chanting on the other side of the wall.

Nearest stations are at Pulborough (just over an hour to London Victoria), and Haslemere (under an hour to Waterloo) – although a car will allow you to make the most of the surrounding area. For example, in chapter 8 we get our first physical descriptions of the narrator and her best friend.

And as Stina begins to question her own sanity she also starts to wonder just who her neighbour really is. On 13th March 2009, OA East conducted a historical building survey at Whispers Cottage, Church Lance in the village of Tydd St Mary, Lincolnshire in advance of alterations scheduled to be made to the former cottage. It takes a while to get going and I don’t think this was helped by the lengthy chapters detailing how Stina and her husband met, or the background to her friendship with Reggie.
