About this deal

Forget them and the rest of your puncture repair kit, and unless you have fingers of steel you could find yourself walking home if you get a flat. If you're really bending and forcing your levers to do the job, it's probably time to look again at the tyres you're running. It was still a time-consuming job and I still wouldn't risk this tyre/rim combo in the field, but that I could do it at all validates the usefulness of Schwalbe's little hook. uk/products/cycle-pals-compact-tire-seating-tool I'd bought last year to get a tyre on a gravel bike wheel with a foam insert ; it took 5 mins!

Most tyre levers nowadays are plastic, and you might never need anything tougher; but steel or alloy options do still exist for really stubborn tyre/rim combinations. Conti GP4000 on Zonda rim for example I had to use a lever to get it back on the rim last time I punctured, absolutely impossible without. Supplied in sets of three, their banana profile might raise eyebrows but is surprisingly effective compared with traditional models and makes short work of stubborn rubber. He also enjoys bike touring and has completed numerous travels on the west coast of Europe, most recently riding from Lisbon to Roscoff. Traditionally, it has been suggested that it is best to start removing a tire opposite from the valve. The lever tip is quite difficult to slip under the bead of the tyre and there isn’t enough curvature to reliably stop the tyre slipping back off once you do manage to get the lever in and under. The notch I use for hooking to a spoke when taking off the tire, not sure if that's correct or not though! The unique (or at least unusual) feature of Schwalbe's tyre levers is a hook in the lever body that you use to pin the tyre bead in place as you install it.

I got some new and very lurid Pedro's levers because they were highly rated and in the LBS, just in case and now I pointlessly want these. I like the VAR tyre lever - VERY helpful with tight tyres at the roadside as it enables you mount the tyre without the risk of snagging the inner tube. I still have my Pedro's mid 90s milk levers, the putting bead back on bit broke on one of them, but the getting bead off is still good on that one and the other two are still going strong. The SKS Leverman levers use essentially the same design as the Schwalbe levers, being wide and quite flat. The unique chisel tip shape easily inserts beneath the tyre bead and the slightly thicker shape keeps the lever securely in place. Some mechanics swear by putting both levers under the bead before using them to lift the bead, and the hook method sometimes isn't possible if the tyre is too tight. Well, that one time you get a flat and you have to fix it in the middle of nowhere and you don't have a tyre lever to hand, you're going to look pretty silly if you can't do it when it's wet and cold and your fingers are going numb. While strong thumbs can be enough to pull the tyre’s bead over the rim, certain rim and tyre combinations will turn you red in the face, so we’d always advise having a set of tyre levers to hand. Ive removed (and installed) Conti 4 seasons, GP5000s and Schwalbe Durano Plus (all folding bead) on 31mm and 55mm hoops with the halfords levers and while they might have ended up flying 50 meters away from me in a random direction a few times.

Often overlooked, these simple tools can save you time and effort, and are essential for any rider’s rear pocket or seat bag. Having raced XC for most of his youth, he has a deep understanding of the sport and loves bounding around the UK to spectate at events.Your tyre-mounting technique could also be a root cause of the problem, so it's worth going over your technique to make sure you're doing it right.

Although first and foremost a tyre manufacturer, it does make sense that Schwalbe would also have a keen interest in tyre levers too. On the other hand, these Winston UK levers are really easy to fit into a saddle bag, making them a great choice for on the go. So, the styles to choose from are pretty limited; sort of like pencils, the design is tried and tested and hasn't really changed much over the years.Every now and then it's possible to find a tyre/rim combo where the fit is either so sloppy that the tyre simply falls into place, or one that is so tight that it takes an army of burly tool-wielding mechanics to get the last few inches of bead over the rim edge. Some of the best tyre levers incorporate metal into their design to ensure they’re strong enough to cope with extreme forces.
