But innovation has been a critical lesson, admits Kate, who says Holland and Barrett initially told them Go Bites would be placed in 300 stores and then only put them in 14. Well, there's plenty of carbohydrate to replenish the glycogen levels in those tired muscles; dates are one of the few dried fruits with a high G.I., which means that the carbohydrate in them is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, there's protein from the eggs to help repair any muscle trauma, the added ginger acts as an anti-inflammatory and the walnuts are a great superfood, containing heaps of omega-3 and anti-oxidants. And it takes only a few minutes to make and tastes gorgeous! When the pilau is cooked, add the fresh coriander and the slices of chilli and serve with the cutlets and the yoghurt sauce. Brown the sausages gently in 1 tbsp of the oil in a large flameproof casserole dish or roasting dish. Set aside. I have been cooking since I was three so the recipes just come to me – often in the middle of the night.”

We launched the Go Bites at Food Matters Live – a big food show at the Excel Centre in London,” she explained. “The buyer from Google happened to try one of our Go Bites at the event and said it tasted fantastic. In another bowl, cream together the margarine, soft brown sugar and malt extract with an electric whisk, until pale and fluffy. Beat in the eggs with the whisk, one at a time. Stir in the buttermilk or yoghurt and the bananas. Put the dates into a bowl with the bicarbonate of soda and pour over the boiling water and leave for 20 minutes I've been busy this afternoon making little lemon tarts and and a rather tempting-to-the-eye apricot tarte tatin...delicious. Well, they probably are, but they're for a friend so I mustn't touch unfortunately! Form walnut-sized balls of the mixture and place onto the baking tray, allowing room for them to spread.Pour into an ovenproof dish (about 20cm diameter, but don't worry if it is a bit smaller or larger).

An excellent choice for children going straight from school to a club, these filling bars are crammed with fruit, nuts, seeds and oats to provide a great balance of carbohydrate, protein and good fats, as well as important minerals and vitamins to sustain them until supper time. Make a batch at the weekend (it only takes 5 minutes; get the kids to join in!) and they’ll see you through the week. For more info on this, see ScienceDaily.com. There are no details, however, about the number of cyclists or the make-up of the sports drink, and it is interesting to see that the research was funded by Dole Foods, the world’s largest fruit and veg company!

Combine the strawberries and the agave nectar in a small saucepan and warm over a very gentle heat. Set aside. According to recent research conducted at Appalachian State University’s Human Performance Lab into the benefits of eating bananas over a carbohydrate sports drink during intense cycling, bananas proved not only to be as effective as the sports drink, but also to have additional advantages. The study, which was carried out over a 75 km intense cycle ride, with cyclists either consuming a half a banana or a carbohydrate sports drink every 15 minutes, showed that those who consumed the bananas were provided with antioxidants not found in the sports drink, as well as a greater nutritional boost, including fibre, potassium and Vitamin B6. The bananas were also found to contain a healthier blend of sugars. Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown, turning the mixture after 10 minutes for it to brown evenly. Pour on the rest of the oil and add some water - about 120ml or to about 1 inch depth. Cover tightly (I covered it with tin foil as I used a roasting dish) and bake in the oven for about 30-40 minutes until the potatoes are just tender.

They have both declared that they’re going to train properly and get the pacing right for the Bath 1/2 in March 2011. They certainly followed my nutrition advice this time. They hydrated really well over the 3 days prior to the race and I cooked them all a deliciously balanced, low-fat, healthy pre-race meal of spaghetti with my slow-roasted tomato sauce the night before…. As a fairly lean runner, I don't really have much of a problem in the muscle tone and fat burn department, but my incredibly active cyclist/kayaking mother-in-law (or, as some say, "extreme grannie"), absolutely swears by these shoes. What they don't mention in the promotional information is that I think you can actually walk further before your legs start to feel tired. This is really important for me - after a 10 mile run sometimes the thought of walking the 3 mile round trip to school to collect my children seems rather daunting....but not with my new Shape Ups! It has been a busy weekend - the book signing on Saturday, the Bristol Half on Sunday followed by a lovely post half lunch at friends and then my birthday (for which Mark cooked a delicious...no, I mean really really delicious roast beef). On top of this of course there have been the normal kids activities - a rugby match against Taunton School and a football match plus rugby, football and swimming training. Not wanting to go too overboard singing my husband's praises, he dealt with all the kids stuff this weekend brilliantly...except the washing of the kit of course (claims he doesn't know how to work the washing machine).Bristol based entrepreneur Kate Percy was recently named as one of the UK's 100 'game changers' by The Sunday Times (Image: BristolLive) Place the apples in a saucepan, cover, and then heat gently with the cinnamon, a tbsp water, a tbsp honey and a tbsp sugar until purreed. Dissolve the bicarbonate of soda in the boiling water and stir it into the melted butter and syrup mixture. But the road to success has not been a fast one. The idea for Kate and Mark’s company began 18 years ago when Mark was training for the New York marathon.

I've been invited onto Radio Bristol's Dinner party Hour on Saturday morning (9-10 if anyone's interested!). I've got to choose 4 people, dead or alive, that I'd like to invite to dinner, what I'd serve to eat and drink and what music I'd play. Of course, Haile Gebrselassie has to be up there amongst my favorites. I think he might be a vegetarian so I'll have to have a think about something delicious for him, or maybe even try out some Teff, an ethiopian grain which is rich in minerals and which the great Haile says contributes to the success of ethiopian runners (along with genes, poverty and sheer determination). Haile Gebrselassie runs with a crooked arm, which is apparently due to the fact that he spent his childhood running 10km to and from school, carrying his books under his arm. This is not just for breakfast! Let kids munch on a bowl of Maple and Almond Crisp while they do their homework. waxy potatoes - they must be waxy ones or the dish won't work - I used pink firs, which I just washed and didn't bother peeling and cut into long halves or quarters depending on their size Try replacing these cereals with 'slow-release' cereals – porridge oats, wholegrain cereals, homemade granola (see recipe) – which release their sugars gradually and provide a steady stream of energy to the brain. Ditching sugary cereals might cause some wingheing initially, but give it a go... I guarantee you’ll see improvements in mood and concentration and fewer sugar ‘highs and lows’. Best of all, you’ll save money on your weekly shop! Kate has created an ‘Eat Like an Athlete’ programme – a set of resources, lesson plans and workshops – that uses sport as a hook to get kids engaged.
