Most of all, the movie depends on Roger Moore, and he delivers a dynamic and amusing performance of a man of action who'd be much happier in an earlier age. Roger Moore did this movie in between "Moonraker" and "For you eyes Only" and it was a nice departure from the Bond character.

Having said all that there is a slightly naive charm to this movie especially if like me you've seen far too many American movies that just feature a good guy massacring several thousand villains without even having to reload . Between the use of real ships on real waters and the excellent visual effects, the film is a refreshing reminder not everything has to be done CGI. Of course the real world isn't so structured but it's nice to relax once in a while and allow our heads a playful descent into the vulgate. Mason's Admiral Sir Francis Brindsen is a stalwart, career naval officer whose contempt for Ffolkes and the man's unconventional methods is matched only by his deep, abiding mistrust of anything that is neither military nor naval.I don't get the double 'F'," says American reporter Johnny Jones to Scott ffolliot, a man he's just met as they speed down a Dutch lane after an assassin. Instead of simply shooting up the place, ffolkes excellently manipulates Kramer as his team prepares to strike.

The rest is primarily climactic and the adventure, action and humor all fall into place the last hour of the movie. Its tongue in cheek nature cheered me up, and surely that's the whole point of these types of films. We leave ffolkes with an award from the British government, delivered to him in Scotland by the Prime Minister herself.The supporting is great, too, with James Mason a joy to watch for his bemused reactions to ffolkes's larger-than-life personality quirks; Michael Parks as Kramer's hypermetropic lieutenant; David Hedison (who'd played Felix Leiter opposite Moore in Live and Let Die) as an oil rig supervisor; Faith Brook as the Thatcher-esque P. His final moments in the movie have since become a tiresome cliché of such thrillers but, when the movie was new, his last scene was a startling surprise.
