About this deal

We used this book last year with Year 2 Around ‘International Music Day’ - the children wrote letters to Mr Big and we made a giant collage of him! With his trademark bold colour and masterful graphic simplicity, Ed Vere sensitively and humorously tackles the universal and current subject of inclusion, reminding the reader that to get to know someone you need to look beyond their exterior. But actually Mr Big is a great pianist, and once his music got to the others, people rushed to get to know more about him. The typography is also clever - text size varies to emphasise different words, which helps both children and adults intonate the story as they read it aloud. Your words, like your reviews, bring books to life and give them a voice before the front cover is even turned.

The book could also be used as an introduction to talking about difference and celebrating diversity. Bedtime for Monsters' was shortlisted for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize in 2011 and the next year Ed had the honour of being one of the four Roald Dahl Funny Prize judges, along with Michael Rosen. from speaking at festivals from Rio to Mexico to Kerala, to curating festival experiences in the UK, to live drawing onstage at The Barbican Centre alongside the Britten Sinfonia, and at The Wigmore hall with the Neil Cowley Trio. Children will particularly enjoy the witty and light-hearted speech bubbles that appear from the characters on several of the pages.En una de les pàgines on representa que s'ha fet de nit, la font de la lletra s'ha fet en negre, amb la qual cosa la lectura és molt difícil. Here's a look at some of the fantastic picture books that we've handed out around the country, for free, over previous years. This is the third picture book from an exciting new talent, whose previous titles The Getaway and Banana have received great critical acclaim.

Everyone in the neighbourhood could hear the beautiful music and wondered where it was coming from; people came from all over town every night to listen to the beautiful music. A story about Mr Big, who felt lonely all the time because he is different (so big) from the others, and every one was scared to get to know him. If you are concerned about the health and wellbeing of yourself or children in your care, you should always consult an appropriate healthcare professional. I like how the celebrity told the story and they showed the pictures of the story at the same time as it teaches that children don't necessarily need to read books all the time to experience a story. This is such a great book to discuss themes of fitting in, being different, and everybody having their own talents which make them unique and special. The final page shows him driving off in a pink Cadillac with his band mates, pursued by autograph hunters shouting, “Thank you, Mr Big! Big is a huge gorilla, who everyone runs away from as they see him as 'big and scary' because of his size. The message of the book is clear, essentially do not judge a book by its cover, and this story livens up the teaching of the age old message.

All children may feel left out at times and this would be a great book to begin a circle time with to talk about how it makes children feel and how they can be a good friend to children who are for example, in the playground playing alone. After all those achingly sad images of Mr Big, it’s an absolute pleasure to see him looking so happy, enjoying the company – and the big time. This story enables children to learn about feelings such as sad and happy and the importance of friendship. They would also only drop off a case of books and leave us to run it – it was so lovely to have you on hand to chat to the children and recommend them books, as well as the small (but appreciated!

Addressed to the Mystery Pianist, it thanks him for the beautiful music and invites him to join ‘a couple of the guys’ at the Blue Note. It was such a pleasure to meet you both, and I really appreciated how smoothly and professionally you ran everything. However Mr big was still alone and sad, until one morning when he received his first ever letter to the pianist. In 2009 'Mr Big' was Booktrust’s official Booktime book, reaching 750,000 British schoolchildren – the largest single print run for a picture book! The pages are displayed with small and large font which links to the emotions of feeling lonely/Happy.

Big is a talented pianist and is only recognised when his music is heard and an anonymous letter invites him to join a band from which he develops great friendship and inclusion in society.
