About this deal

The theme music for the Ninety-Nine Novels podcast is Anthony Burgess’s Concerto for Flute, Strings and Piano in D Minor, performed by No Dice Collective. Bomber Command, chosen by Anthony Burgess as one of the best ninety-nine novels in English published since 1939. These individuals cannot accept the ranks members of the “lower class” achieve but are forced to work with them.

Since this was published in 1971, word processors was not something anyone had, so maybe he is right. An exhaustive and, to some extent, exhausting fictional account of a British bombing raid on a German town in mid-1943.Dust wrapper supplied in archive acetate film protection, it does not adhere to the book or to the dust wrapper. Illustrator Raymond Hawkey (1930-2010) designed the classic 1960's James Bond paperbacks for Pan Books. The independent-minded quarterly magazine that combines good looks, good writing and a personal approach. In 1979 Motörhead frontman, Lemmy, dedicated the band's third album Bomber to Len Deighton, as it was his novel that had inspired the title track.

Here, it marvelously demonstrates an intimate connection that counterbalances the faceless anonymity of aerial warfare. August Bach, for example, the Luftwaffe radar officer, begins a tepid love affair with his child’s nanny, Anna-Luisa. Burgess also put Joseph Heller’s “Catch-22” on his list, and it’s tempting to put “Bomber” and Heller’s classic side by side, as variations on the same theme. In all areas the author’s diligence and knowledge of air campaigns is remarkable as is his precise depictions of planes, weapons, and behind the scenes war strategy.

It is the fictionalised account of "the events relating to the last flight of an RAF Bomber over Germany on the night of June 31st, 1943", [1] a deliberately non-existent date, in which an RAF bombing raid on the Ruhr area of western Germany goes wrong. The ten consisted of three trilogies, beginning with Berlin Game, Mexico Set, and London Match from 1983 to 1985, and a prequel.

Readers knowledgeable about the air war will appreciate the technical details which Deighton lavishly provides but the casual reader will also be caught up by his talented storytelling.Deighton takes the time to describe many of these fatalities in clinical detail, as though writing an autopsy.
