About this deal

Many of the illustrations in this series were by Harry Wingfield, John Berry, Martin Aitchison, Frank Hampson and Charles Tunnicliffe. The books in this series are not parodies, but instead use the classic format to serve as clear introductions to a wide variety of subjects, generally in the fields of science and history. From the 1950s, under the guidance of editorial director Douglas Keen, Ladybird started to develop series of books including ‘Nature’, ‘Adventures from History’, ‘Travel’, ‘People at Work’, ‘How it Works’ and ‘Well-Loved Tales’, all in the same familiar portrait hardback format.

By 1970 a number of Ladybird books had been translated and were being sold overseas and it is estimated that Ladybird Books have been translated into around 70 different languages. Ladybird Books children’s classics feature everything from classic fairy tales to early learning books to TV adaptations of classics. Titles in this Set include: 12 Phonics readers, 4 Maths sticker books, 2 Handwriting sticker books 52 Flash cards. However, falling demand in the late 1990s led Pearson to fully merge Ladybird into its Penguin Books subsidiary in 1998, joining other established names in British children's books such as Puffin Books, Dorling Kindersley and Frederick Warne.Original 1960s Ladybird School Wall Poster (Peter and Jane from the Ladybird Key Words Reading Scheme). One year later, they merged with the Pearson Group, one of Britain’s biggest publishing groups who owned companies such as Longman, Penguin, Westminster Press and the Financial Times. In November 2014, Ladybird signed up to the Let Books Be Books campaign and announced that it was "committed" to avoiding labelling books as "for girls" or "for boys" and would be removing such gender labelling in reprinted copies. Early books used a standard 56-page format, chosen because a complete book could be printed on one large standard sheet of paper, a quad crown, 40 inches by 30 inches, [14] which was then folded and cut to size without waste paper. In kurzen Texten, mit Bildern illustriert, erfährt man im Handumdrehen das Wichtigste über die diversen Königshäuser und die politischen Konflikte seit der frühester Geschichte. Key Words to Literacy and the Teaching of Reading: a Basic Word List for Developing Early Reading and Writing Skills. But the text is powerful too – tightly written, narratively strong and capable of explaining quite grown-up things simply.

From the beginning, the company was identified by a ladybird logo, at first with open wings, but eventually changed to the more familiar closed-wing ladybird in the late 1950s. The company went from strength to strength and in 1961 decided to concentrate on producing the popular children’s books. Small format buff matt boards with blue lettering and decs in pictorial dustwrapper; 52pp; colour ills; blue open-winged ladybird endpapers. In 1996 Ladybird Books became a subsidiary of the Penguin Books Group and in 1998 Penguin took over the management of the company, closing the iconic Loughborough printing works later that same year. Two more books were published in this series, Series 401, in 1940 and three more, though with a different author, were published the following year. From 1945 onwards the Ladybird offering really started to grow, first with the introduction of their non-fiction Uncle Mac titles – the first one, In Green Pastures, published in 1945 – and with more books added to series 401 and 413 and then series 474 (Tasseltip tales) from 1947 and series 497 (Animal tales) from 1949. The look of the boards of the books underwent various different changes over the years but up until 1965 all books were first published with printed dust jackets. I LOVED Dennis the Dragon, Mervyn Town Mouse, Thumbelina, Cinderella, The Elves and the Shoemaker, The Princess and the Frog and Rapunzel.
