About this deal

Arriving six years after her second album (Running with Scissors), the overarching themes here bravely constitute hearts bared and scars displayed. Devlin asks on Honest Men, which addresses the sense of displacement she experienced while initially floundering.

For all that, Devlin delivers a stinging riposte to the music business as an entity and to some people in particular. Those highs included signing for the Dalai Lama, performing to over 80,000 at Croke Park and even having Courtney Love insist that she was a distant relative of Kurt’s, although there is no evidence for this claim. It’s clear as day that Janet is singing from the heart even if the deeper meanings are occasionally shrouded in metaphors. Then 16 years of age, she always seemed out of place in the entertainment-at-all-costs environment and, like other aspiring performers, once she was turfed out, she crumbled for a while. Beautifully executed, a demonstration of maturity, strength, courage, wisdom, and survival, we commend Janet Devlin’s ‘Confessional’ to you.

In this blog section we host new music releases, artist features and handpicked playlists by the Musicngear staff. As a fan of Janet since her X factor audition I knew I would love this book, it brought me so much emotion hearing things about Janet that I never knew and along with the album Confessional these two pieces of work are in my opinion her greatest creations to date. Janet Devlin got a lot off her chest and managed to deliver a grown-up, cohesive and well-crafted record while doing so!Book arrived yesterday, started reading at 7am today and have read cover to cover, WOW just WOW , a totally open, honest, heartfelt book. In 2020, before the album's release, she released an extended play named after the album's third single "Honest Men", which contained the title track and two previously released singles, "Confessional" and "Saint of the Sinners". The stripped back ballad is an afterthought that reminds us life might hit us in the face at the next corner again which is the only honest note this album could end on. Saint of Sinners features a truly haunting violin; that breathes the mournful and ancient quality of our traditional music; paired with a tribal, almost primal percussion section. But rather than this steering her towards greater musical success, Janet faced numerous challenges which almost cost her her career. Here lyeth my confessional of the sins I want so much to be free from and to finally forgive myself for. I recomment reading this book and if you have a daughter who you think thinks dark thoughts, perhaps she.

Making her own mark, firmly establishing her own stamp, ‘Confessional’ is interspersed with the sound of ‘home’ and traditional Irish twists and turns; the spiritual impact of her Irish upbringing examined in ‘Holy Water’, ‘Sweet Sacred Friend’ and references to her upbringing, childhood, the loss of innocence, and references to mental health such as in ‘Away with the Fairies’, as they’d say in Ireland. The track, penned by Janet with Nathan Thomas and produced by Jonathan Quarmby ( Lewis Capaldi, Tom Walker, Benjamin Clementine) is the singer’s announcement to the world that her frank admission of the sins and stories that have defined her journey, will soon be revealed. Calendar arrived safely in plastic-free packaging - which I've not seen before with a calendar, so kudos for that. Especially ‘Sweet Sacred Friend’ and ‘Holy Water’ are both lighter in spirit, upbeat, insanely catchy and drenched in Irish folk instrumentation.

Devlin fully lets the power of music do its thing with a song that could inspire and help people who went through a similar thing. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. The descriptions of depression and alienation Janet Devlin experienced are something everyone can relate to. This song makes a powerful statement, and throws a spotlight on Janet’s decade-long journey towards self-discovery, a fight that has seen her defeat personal demons of every variety.
