About this deal

Demir Grappo is an outcast by choice—he fled a life of wealth and power, abandoning his responsibilities as a general, a governor, and a son. While the first three POVs’ plots were interwoven almost from the very beginning, Idrian’s plot started off as separate from them and slowly merged with the other plots. The cruel machines of state, and it's even crueler contraptions threaten to turn his entire world apart.

Morlius whirled toward the rack of wine bottles, yelling wordlessly, reaching toward the bottles without touching them.

In the Shadow of Lightning is an incredibly unique and imaginative novel—but I wouldn’t have expected anything less from the author.

The supporting cast was also very compelling, including a couple of strong female leads who play important, memorable roles in the story. Purpose – not just pursuit of wealth or fame or sex or revenge but real purpose – had been thrust upon him.Demir Grappo is an outcast—he fled a life of wealth and power, abandoning his responsibilities as a general, a governor, and a son. I am the greatest killer in this world,’ he declared, his voice rising as he spoke, his eyes taking on a terrifying fire. Characters even talk to themselves to make their feelings even more abundantly clear than they already are, rather than them being hinted at or shown through actions. Hopefully I won't have to wait too long to discover how the characters created by Brian are fairing, my evenings will be a tiny bit less exciting until then. She jumps to a lot of conclusions, especially with Demir, and she tends to not think things through fully.

Once Braileer shows that he will not leave Idrian’s side, even in intense battle, Idrian knows that he will not dismiss him despite his greenness.

I've heard very mixed things about Powder Mage as well, and this book certainly has scared me off of McClellan for awhile, at least. Unfortunately, though, the reality currently is that I have spent 14 days trying to read this book and failing. He’d made his point, but it still took a force of will to keep himself from destroying every piece of glass in the bar and then throwing it all into Morlius’s face. Demir examined Capric’s tired, earnest expression for several moments to see the truth of things, then opened the door and vomited out his breakfast on the cobbles. I received an eARC of this via the publisher and was very much looking forward to it as my first McClellan read.

Special thanks to my Patrons on Patreon for giving me extra support towards my passion for reading and reviewing! I would have liked if the narrative showed more of his con-artistry ways, but overall he was well done.
