The upper bezel isn't deep enough to house a camera, so the same convention is used here as was found in last year's MateBook X Pro (2020) and MateBook D 15 (2020), with the pop-up camera located in the keyboard, under a Fn row key. Huawei even keeps the weight of the power adapter down to 159g, and it’s a slimline affair that’s more akin to a phone power plug. This really isn’t all that bad and shows that a little light gaming certainly isn’t out of the question.
Despite taking a lot of design cues from Apple, it also includes some useful innovations, like a hidden webcam in the keyboard and NFC sharing with compatible smartphones, but the battery life and screen are disappointing. The touchpad is large and responsive, and there's a fingerprint sensor embedded in the power button, which sits to the right of the keyboard, level with the Fn key row. it’s even heavier than the HP Pavilion; if size and weight are your main concerns rather than screen size, then the excellent 14in Acer Swift 5 is well worth a look as an alternative. We measure a maximum of just under 60 watts in the stress test, and analogous to the processor's TDP, this value drops to around 55 watts in the course of the test. But three factors come to its aid, including generously sized keys, quiet operation and a spacious precision trackpad. In the multi-core section, the CPU not only outperforms all other laptops with the same processor but also manages to run at full speed for the entire duration of our stress test. Huawei’s concern about weight and portability has extended to the 65W power supply, too, with a 160g slimline affair with a retractable third prong.
The screen is surrounded by impressively thin bezels, which keeps the overall size of the Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020) down, while also adding to that premium and modern look of the device. It's compatible with phones in the Mate 40 and Mate 30 series, P40 series and Nova 6 series, as well as with a small number of Honor handsets. The multi-function USB-C port can be used for charging and data transmission, Display output not supported.
However, the location of the webcam won’t be to everyone’s taste, as it points upwards towards you which can lead to some rather unflattering shots. They fire downwards, so they sound more punchy when the D15 is resting on a flat, solid surface, but pick it up and things sound altogether less impressive.
