About this deal

Frank Baum’s cherished children’s classic, vividly reimagined with beautiful four-color artwork and nine interactive features created by MinaLima, the award-winning design studio behind the graphics for the Harry Potter film franchise. As such, I had extremely high expectations going into this and I’m very pleased to say they were met entirely.

Madeline Miller’s presentation of this myth of Pygmalion and Galatea finally gives Galatea the name, voice, and complexity she deserves. For more books like Galatea, you can’t go wrong with Madeline Miller’s two bestselling novels, Circe and The Song of Achilles. He demands his wife’s meekness, devotion, beauty, and perfection, even as his own hair thins and belly fattens. However the mortal life sees her virtually imprisoned by a husband who seeks to control her and brands her mad after several attempts to flee. But perhaps what’s most revealing about the release of “Galatea ” is less what it says and more what it signals: Miller’s ascendancy to the kind of literary stardom that transmutes her work into something to be possessed and displayed. La historia de Galatea y Pigmalión siempre se ha visto como una historia de amor, pero en la actualidad, solo podemos encontrar misoginia y manipulación.

For example, Miller hints at how women can be perpetrators of violence against other women — by highlighting, for instance, the nurse’s complacency while the doctor and Galatea’s husband mistreat her — but she could’ve delved it deeper. Galatea,” which was originally released in the anthology “ XO Orpheus: Fifty New Myths,” begins with its lead character in repose. Although it’s fast to read, it’s perfectly contained, breathtakingly powerful, and a piece of writing you’ll want to immediately discuss with fellow bookworms. The sale of customised goods or perishable goods, sealed audio or video recordings, or software, which has been opened. Locked away and under constant supervision, Galatea is determined to break free and rescue her daughter.Galatea è una statua greca trasformata in umana per soddisfare il desiderio del suo scultore Pigmalione.

This is a story by Madeline Miller we're talking about here, author of the brilliant novels Circe and The Song of Achilles. A terrifying and incredible insight covering co-dependency, mental health, erotomania, expectation and relational dysfunction. Miller’s retelling deals with themes such as personhood, female subjugation, and male pleasure — subjects that were only alluded to in the original. I don’t blame him for this exactly, since he had known me only as a statue, pure and beautiful and yielding to his art. I was extra excited to find this story as my community is currently doing a community read of Circe with Miller giving a talk and interview later this week.

After all, it was Pygmalion's disdain for women and his belief that all of them were whores unworthy of his time that drove him to create his own "perfect" woman; first as a statue while later bringing her to life with the help of Aphrodite. I found the interpretation of Galatea’s story interesting, seeing how the transformation from statue to human might (or might not) fit into society.

She is absolutely amazing, even though she always rips my heart right out of my chest and crushes it between her fingers using only her words. From the National Book Award-winning, bestselling author of Three Junes comes "an engrossing, richly drawn and exquisitely told story of small-town residents grappling with the difficulties of changing times" (People). As Miller explains in the story’s afterword, it’s a response, “almost solely”, to Ovid’s version of the Pygmalion myth in the Metamorphoses. Having born him a daughter and seen how limited their child’s life will be with such a domineering, misogynistic father, Galatea has tried to escape him and save her daughter, but so far failed. Galatea’s bitterness, pain and rage are palpable as is her resolve to change the trajectory of her life.
