About this deal

On 11 August 1942, Wellum led 8 Spitfires launched from the carrier HMS Furious to reinforce the RAF fighter complement at Luqa airfield on the island of Malta. It's a good thing to see this kind of movie and remind ourselves that what we enjoy and even deride today cost the ultimate sacrifice of millions. Viihdyttävä ja vetävä kirja sisältää kaikesta huolimatta paljon kiehtovaa tietoa hävittäjien käsittelystä ja vaihtelevista taistelulennoista.

Yet the constant life-or-death stress of murderous combat and anguish over the loss of his closest friends sapped endurance. The Tiger Moth, I knew from his book, was what Geoffrey had first flown in his RAF service back in 1939. He stayed in the RAF after 1945, serving in Germany as a staff officer, followed by a four-year tour of duty with 192 Squadron.I walked into the pub on my own, saw John Romain, James and Anna at a table round the corner, waved, went to the bar and thought nothing more of it. No wonder that after 2 years of operational flying he is completely worn out, and he and the reader can finally pause for breath. My gamble to go into instructing first in an effort to gain a lot of tailwheel experience in a short space of time, rather than to the airlines and more money, was starting to look like it might have been worth it. A stunning collection of Philip’s finest works, encompassing all of the most famous aircraft from around the world.

The fact that Wellum was teenager when he entered the RAF makes me realize all over again what the people of England were willing to do to protect their homes and their land. Two months before the outbreak of WWII, seventeen-year-old Geoffrey Wellum leaves school to become a fighter pilot with the RAF. Three years later I walked through the gates of the RAF College Cranwell, to begin as a trainee pilot. Two months before the outbreak of WWII, seventeen-year-old Geoffrey Wellum becomes a fighter pilot with the RAF .He was made up by that, and asked me a million questions about it, before we had a photo and he got back to his lunch. His sense of delight at being allowed to fly this remarkable aircraft is quite tangible, and he obviously regards the Spitfire with great affection: "The Spit is beginning to feel a friendly aeroplane. Light reading creasing to spine; tiny chipping to base of spine; else a very good plus copy of a SCARCE first paperback edition, ninth printing SIGNED BY AUTHOR, GEOFFREY WELLUM. There is also a sense of fun and good humour in this section, which contrasts with the serious and intense tone of David Crooks "Spitfire Pilot" and Richard Hillary's "The Last Enemy.

Incidentally, it was around this time that I learned my grandfather flew the Typhoon during WWII and that his last flight was from Goodwood. He relates his innermost thoughts as he progresses, and survives, whilst close friends are killed in the fight for survival of these Islands against the Nazi war machine. Soon after getting back from Duxford that weekend I wrote to him, and told him that I had some leave coming up and I’d very much like to come down to Cornwall and see him on one of those days, to take him for a beer and say thank you for everything. It was a slightly extra curricular activity, but Chichester was local to where he lived, and also local to my home. It was the first, first-person account I'd ever read of the Battle of Britain, and my heart ached for the author (the youngest pilot to take part in the Battle).
