Once we’d used the remote to set the temperature in degrees Celsius, the fan kicked in straightaway and then shut off when the room was up to temperature. This design simply plugs directly into an electrical socket which means it requires no floor or table space, making it perfect for a small room, plus there are no unsightly cables to navigate. The heat escapes from the vent at the top, making this a convection heater like many others, but after about half an hour the rest of the cast iron body heats up too, radiating warmth outwards for quite a while after it’s turned off.

They are convection heaters, meaning that as the heat rises it draws in cooler air in underneath to be heated in turn - an effect that works best in well-sealed rooms. They’re ideal for chasing the cold away instantly, and, if you choose one with a ceramic element rather than metal, it’ll heat up faster, requiring less energy initially to get hot. It has a few dust traps, but it was quiet (although continues to make a noise after it’s turned off, while it cools). The dual positioning means you have a little more control over the flow of hot air, although there's no oscillation with this basic fan heater.
Design One of the most appealing aspects of the Russell Hobbs Plug In Heater is that it’s super compact. Ideal for quick, targeted warmth, fan heaters work by blowing air over a heated element as it passes into the room – this means they can be noisy. We loved the rubber feet (which didn’t leave dents in the carpet) and the carry handle made it convenient to move from room to room. This means they’re slower to warm a room up than a fan heater, but are much quieter and the heating will usually be more even. The hot air jets on this compact heater are powerful, and we did enjoy whacking it up to the top setting and sitting near it like a cat next to a fireplace.It's slower to warm a room, but once warmed the heat stays around for longer, potentially making it more energy efficient over the long term, and it can slowly but surely heat a large space of up to 20sqm. Please note that the device may require some time to heat up before reaching the desired temperature. Its air strength was fairly strong, but it wasn’t the cheapest to run when it came to energy consumption. I found ihis wasn’t nearly as long as the cables on the other heaters I tested, potentially limiting where it’s plugged in and where it can be used. Tiny heaters like this, which plug directly into the power socket with no cables, are a relatively new invention.
All in all it took around an hour to heat the 15sqm space from cold where it was placed when on high, so this is a better option for a room where you're happy to leave a heater on all day long, rather than a good option for a quick blast of heat. While not as potent as air conditioners, it could save you having to fit both appliances into your house. Once the heating had been off for a few hours post-school run, we cranked up a portable heater to the top and timed how long it took to heat up the room, setting a stopwatch on our phone to record an accurate measurement.
