After checking out every other detail of my new Epiphone, I was super excited to plug it in and see what it could do. Its easy playability, quality construction, and beefy humbucker-driven tone make it a prized starter electric guitar. So if I could leave you with two pieces of advice, the first one being to always try and keep an open mind about things, inside and outside of your gear choices and brand leanings.

A master tone, master volume and a switch (thats slightly crackly, but not too bad) is perfect for me, simple and to the point. I also read in some reviews that the strings needed to be substituted so I bought along with the guitar a set of Ernie Ball "Slinkys" . With few notable exceptions, like hand made custom guitars, absolutely ALL new guitars require set up. And as for sound, these dual-humbuckers produce rich, warm, and clear sounds, and just like the PAF originals featured in the original LP, these pickups can be very aggressive and cutting when you need them to be.These and the Squire brand guitars are a great positive gateway instrument that brings life-long appreciation for music and craftsmanship. It has better hardware(tuners) and it’s more comfortable to play, but the Les Paul VE is more versatile overall. I liked to use a slide with it, but, after a while of doing that, the high E would snap at the bridge thing, after an "aggressive" slide work out.

Nowadays, most of us would consider ourselves lucky to have a nice Epiphone, and my test-drive of this new Les Paul Special VE has sold me on that even further. With Squire offering up the Bullet and Affinity versions of their Mustang and Jazzmaster guitars, Epiphone is offering up a new Les Paul Special model, branded VE or Vintage Edition. But coming from someone who has been playing for a while, it took a lot of EQ fiddling and pickup height adjustment to get them where I wanted.

Some may think sports provide some of those life lessons too, but with guitar, you don't risk critical injury or regular public humiliation. In the Les Paul Special Vintage Edition, you get the Epiphone 650R and 700T, which are surprisingly powerful pups.
