We saw a number of event shelters on holiday in 2012 and after discussing their merits with the owners, decided to purchase one for our 2013 holiday. I needed no help and the mechanisms for extending the legs were smooth – I have pitched similar where you need someone at each side as it goes up or it collapses and the difficulties in actually doing it need a heavyweight champion strength to achieve it My 10 year old could have done this with no issues and it felt strong and safe – at no point was I fearful of nipping my fingers! Pitching in around 15 minutes and providing excellent protection from the rain or sun, the shelter measures 3m x 3m, offering a more compact sheltered space outdoors. It made the freezing rain up in the Pennines at easter weekend 2012 quite tolerable, it gave us a place to congregate and cook in the dry, and it also helped to give us a little bit of cover at night when the temperatures dropped to near freezing after dark.

Easy-to-Assemble: The Coleman Event Shelter can be pitched in a matter of minutes, it comes with detailed instructions and you can even watch video above if you're still unsure how to erect it. Great British weather and all that means we DO need shelter from the rain (and occasionally the sun) and this event shelter, which went up with just me pitching for the first time, took 15 minutes from start to finish. Combine that with pegs which can pin those feet down, and guy ropes to fasten it to the ground to prevent against wind issues, and you might consider moving into it permanently (especially because Coleman also separately sells walls to turn it into a full-blown tent).

It does however fit neatly into its own bag and we have a trolley so it would happily be pulled along on that. Only a couple of months ago we reviewed their beefy Valdes 6L Inflatable Tent which was hugely impressive, and more recently we've been enjoying (or rather sheltering from) the last of the summer sun beneath their equally large Event Shelter 3x3.

If you vary just a little from the desired shape, then it is very hard to get the material to attach to the poles and this could also cause leaking in heavy rain. By the end of our holiday we were adept at putting the shelter up and packing it away with no problem at all. One great thing worth mentioning is the curved roof is a blessing in the wind because the wind just whips straight over the top! As you might assume, this has been designed purely for garden and camping deployment, and of course the likes the school fairs and church fetes. Admittedly the temperatures were in the late 20s and it was full on sun but we were disappointed by how much sun penetrated the canopy.
