About this deal

The idea of erasure reminds me of Niamh Prior’s recent short story titled ‘Peter and Jane’ , which uses only the 300 key words from the eponymous Ladybird First Reader Series to convey dark tales of Peter and Jane’s adulthood. Thompson is unique in her approach in how she weaves these themes and messaging in, giving it's significance at just the right moments, to leave you in awe of what she's mastered in this book.

After spending the 80s playing keyboards with the almost, but not quite famous, post-punk band The Woodentops, she turned to writing. Seller has stated it will dispatch the item within 1 working day upon receipt of cleared payment - opens in a new window or tab .Artemis, almost compulsively, ticks off their personality traits: their commander, Seth, is inflexible, his life governed by rules; Luther’s faith in technology is akin to religion; Masami is mentally the strongest of the crew because, like Seth, “she lacked all imagination, or originality of thought”. Thompson’s gripping narrative invites the reader to solve the mystery of Burnt Island and the true purpose of Max Long’s fellowship.

Dreams being such a prominent motif, the novel’s uncomfortable sense of dislocation is both blurred and heightened by a hallucinatory otherworldliness, and once the crew have reached Oneiros to find an AI-created virtual reality awaiting them it becomes harder than ever to say for sure what’s real and what isn’t. She is glad to be on this mission because she can trust that all the materials around her are real, unlike the ubiquitous fabricated scenarios of virtual realities on technology-obsessed Earth.

The Book Collector throws the essential elements of the gothic chiller into a blender and what emerges is something between pastiche and critique, in which its author never loses sight of the need to give her readers, first and foremost, an unputdownable yarn.

Following logic, it would then mean that the reader cannot trust literally anything to have actually happened as described.Chimera being uniquely its own, I'd side mention if you liked Becky Chambers To Be Taught if Fortunate for it's slower pacing, more prophetic musings and questions surrounding life and the dynamics of characters on a spaceship for a lonely space mission, this would probably be a good read for you, as Chimera ties in similarly in that way. In a desperate bid for success, Max decides to compromise his talent by writing a horror bestseller. She was the former keyboard player with post-punk eighties band, The Woodentops and joint winner with Graham Swift of The James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction for her first novel, Justine .
