This award is presented “to an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender individual who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for any of those communities”.Clive's own childhood ritual of screwing up his face at the window is an example of one of his own masks in action, as is his showman's face in promotional interviews which covers an intensely private persona. I don't know if there were other ways to make the Night Breed seem amicable and transcend the cliché embedded perception of monsters, but I thought it was counterintuitive to what the novel tried to achieve. If you can’t credit me with simply being a person who loves books and likes talking about them, at least credit me with enough common sense to be a better villain. Barker is one of the leading authors of contemporary horror/fantasy, writing in the horror genre early in his career, mostly in the form of short stories (collected in Books of Blood 1 – 6), and the Faustian novel The Damnation Game (1985).

Cabal shares similar themes, with Weaveworld's tribe - the Seerkind - paralleled by the Nightbreed, hiding from humanity in their underground refuge. Although Boone is our gateway into the world of the Breed, it is Lori who is given the more heroic role, overcoming trials and proving her strength of character. Our imaginations have designed them as if to represent the hungers that we all feel but can never hope to satisfy, presented - as we are daily - with an infinitely appetizing world and senses pitifully numbed by custom and education. They were touring with it around the art house cinemas of the country, and , even in its rough state, you could see how the theatrical version was so butchered. Even there, the concept of Midian itself in the author's mind is fluid, "Midian is a place of the imagination," he agrees, "It's a place of dreams as much as it's a place of nightmares.But who could look with pleasure on the revenge her people were taking, with all its calculation and its care? I'm not above giving this novel another try when the events outside my window aren't scarier than the ones a horror novelist conjured, but this was one of those books I started rewriting in my head while reading it: terrific theme and some solid prose undone by feeble characters, inane plotting and storytelling that never took off for me. All the walkways and stuff isn't the Midian described in the book - it's all very, very vaguely described.

Midian is full of monsters, but each monster is monstrous in a different way, and their life, diverse as it is, is shown to be valuable. The creatures in the medieval vision of Heaven and Hell, the creatures that live underground and would be the devils, are in fact the human forces. It was originally published in the United States as part of a collection comprising a novel and several short stories from Barker's sixth and final volume of the Books of Blood. And Decker had shown him the proof – the hellish photographs where the last victims were forever stilled, splayed int he last obscene moment of their torture.

Naturally there are some new angles to it, but they're not as impactful as some of his other creations. No doubt some of the prisoners were guilty as charged, she thought: of eating human flesh, or of desiring it. I mean, Barker's entire point is undercut by one fundamental problem: the Night Breed are portrayed as the good guys and the humans are the evil and duplicitous ones.

I can’t talk about Cabal in the way that I want to without talking about plot points and character developments, which will take the delight out of reading it for the first time. As the mythology was further developed in the movie, so were the specifics of the look of Midian itself, although the physical characteristics of the cemetery had always been clear in Clive's mind, inspired by a specific location in North London: "I've always loved Highgate, it's really a necropolis like Midian. But before I go any further, I have to say, if you haven’t read Cabal before then please do not read this review as there will be spoilers ahead. The text gives Sheryl and other characters a little background whilst adding brief visuals of Decker to maintain his forbidding presence - deft touches allowing the complexity which the authorial presence gave in the book to now translate onto the screen.

I don't think the overall message of Cabal is complex or profound, but let's examine a particular scene (or maybe more of an event) that unlocks its meaning. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find a set of teeth that doesn’t look the same as every other set of teeth. As a child of 11 ish when I first read it, I wanted to know more about Midian, and those who lived there, it felt like we had just had the briefest of introductions to this world. I'm a fan of Stephen King so flipping between King and Barker books is easy to do with the two both complementing each others styles.
