About this deal

The authors detail dangerous and ludicrous procedures women were put through once midwives were discredited and women became convinced that male doctors knew the most about birthing babies. Personally I found it impossible not to be fascinated by some of the long held assumptions of birth and labour I didn't realise I had, and have been paying more attention than ever to the type of language I and others use when discussing labour and birth. It is slightly one sided, in that it doesn't necessarily talk much about the joys of parenthood, but if you're struggling it can be very helpful as she has a great way of describing some of the hardships of new motherhood. I didn't feel at any stage that there was a preference for home birth over other types, but moreso that in more medicalised births, there is less to talk about / less choice and agency for women simply because that is the reality of these types of births (a woman can't perform her own c section, or decide what dose of medication she needs based on her body weight for example), which means there is less to discuss (and less time devoted to this in the book).

As the rate of homebirth increases in the UK, this important new book offers a basic, practical guide for anyone involved in the planning, resourcing and facilitation of safe and respectful birth at home. I think he is THE GREATEST advocate of maternal / baby health and it alarms me how many doctors scare patients, instead of empower and educate them! It is important that you always seek the guidance of your doctor or other qualified health professional with any questions you may have regarding your health, your pregnancy or any medical conditions. Covering everything from scans to stretch marks, hypnobirthing to pain relief, as well as specific advice for partners, The Happy Birth Book will be there for you every step of the way. Birth is a testament to Grant’s impeccable reporting and storytelling skills, pulling back the curtain on pregnancy in America while also pushing us to understand what the stakes are and what it will take to move forward.

I think this book really caused me to get into my head too much and expect a negative hospital birth (even though I want a hospital birth). On the other hand, they did acknowledge that some women actually do benefit from an epidural when they are too exhausted to progress anymore. Bill and Martha Sears are uniquely qualified to answer virtually every question you might have about the birth process. Chatty and thorough and uplifting: this book is a whacking great confidence boost right where it’s needed.

And so I'm inspired to keep working to improve my ability to help women labor who need more active ways of laboring, and those who need my help or encouragement to relax. It's a look at connection and attachment and how mothers are creating a loving relationship with their baby. My own individual circumstances have not diminished what this book provides; instead it means I can choose to do an extra bit of reading around aspects of my birth, feeding etc that are specific to me, and of course this means there are some small sections of the Positive Birth Book which won't be relevant to me. Her book, "What Mother's Do", is one of the best known books talking about the experience of being a mother and how difficult it is to pinpoint what mother's actually do.This is a very informative book with details on different medications and their side-effects, ways to lessen the pain-fear connection during childbirth (Is there a such thing as a painless childbirth? Those who read this will know far more about birth than most others fronting up to the birth suite in labour. The Positive Birth Book has now been translated into Dutch and Russian, and a new UK edition will be published in March 2022.

Like many of the Pinter and Martin Books in this series, it’s a short and easily accessible read that helps people to understand their feelings better and also to validate how strong these feelings can be.I appreciate the "my choice" method mentioned in the first chapter, but I couldn't not get into the book.

In remarkable detail and with great compassion, Grant recounts the ups downs, fears, joys, and everyday moments of each woman’s pregnancy and postpartum journey, offering a rare look into their inner lives, perspectives, and choices in real time—and addresses larger issues facing the entire nation, from discrimination in medicine and treatment (both gender and race-based) to fertility, family planning, complicated feelings about motherhood and career, and the stigmas of miscarriage and postpartum blues. Whether it’s your first, second or fifth baby, most of us approach childbirth with some trepidation. Squatting - stretches ligaments to widen the pelvic outlet, prepares thigh and leg muscles for this valuable birth posture, and conditions you to squat instead of bend over to pick up objects. If you are too scared to talk to someone about how you are thinking, I'd recommend reading this first. Sears is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and a fellow of the Royal College of Pediatricians (RCP).

Fully revised and updated, this new edition will help you work out what kind of birth you really want, and learn how to maximise your chances of getting it. What I noticed reading through (most of) it this time was the spirit of it: it's a spirit of fighting for what you want/believe is right, and of seeking for the information you need. If you are struggling to find your own way as a parent, and feel bombarded with different approaches, this might be a bit of an antidote as it shows how varied (and at times contradictory) different childcare approaches are. J. Marsh, Judith O'Reilly, Kelly Clayton, Kim Nash, Leah Mercer, Liz Fenwick, Louise Jensen, Louise Mumford, Malcolm Hollingdrake, Marcia Woolf, Mark Stay, Marcie Steele, Natasha Bache, Nick Jackson, Nick Quantrill, Nicky Black, Patricia Gibney, Rachel Sargeant, Rob Parker, Rob Scragg, S. There are various books that I have recommended to people over the years, and I thought it might be useful to list some of them here.
