About this deal

I haven’t used it for as long, but I think it has a slight edge in that it’s more balanced in its pop/Classical approach, and it’s less hokey.

This first book is considered a preparatory level (what I affectionately refer to as “musical kindergarten”). If you are using other repertoire or teaching material for beginners, this book won't be compatible with most of them as a lot of methods teach starting with both thumbs on middle C and the fingers moving outwards from there. One other note: My teacher has been using Faber for quite some time, but does not recommend the "Adult All-in-One" series. The second book has more diversity in selection and includes a healthy mix of contemporary, Classical and original pieces. The first level (this book) covers several basic keys (scales, most frequently used chords), 1/8 notes, pedals, staccato. A piece from the RCM Preparatory book might take two to three times as long to learn as a piece from the Alfred’s Adult book. Before starting this book, I'd played guitar using tab, but could not play piano or read sheet music. The student is encouraged to use the accompanying CD and playing along with these recordings is not only enjoyable, but is invaluable for reinforcing musical concepts such as rhythm, dynamics and phrasing.

It’s the book I used exclusively when I first started teaching piano, so I have a soft spot in my heart for it. As you’ll see in the video at the end, I show you just how far you will advance in this book if you follow it by starting at the beginning and taking each page/concept one at a time. I got this book as a more adult supplement to my main beginner's method, which is aimed at children, with the aim of expanding my repertoire. After that decide if you want to go on to the next level and if not find something else to continue with. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions.Since all these books are interconnected, it even tells you at what page you’re ready to start a supplemental book. There’s so much to overcome at this stage in your learning journey – I’d almost go so far as to say it’s one of the hardest points of your learning journey period. With Beautiful Brown Eyes it’s a combination of learning a new chord AND the ¾ time signature AND the bottom-top left-hand pattern. Now when I see people playing beautiful music on public pianos, I admire them and wish to be able to do that.

I got to the point where I could play the whole thing from memory and made a darn good job of it, even though I say so myself, and even being able to keep in time with recordings (Alfred Brendel! The next adult series I’ll be talking about on this channel is the Piano Adventures one, so stay tuned for that. One of the best places to start for adults is Alfred’s Adult Piano Course which comes in three levels.

Play with a metronome to help you keep the rhythm (there are free metronome apps available for your iPad). There’s also an appendix of references, including the Circle of Fifths, chord charts, and scale charts. But once you get through that stormy patch, the going is pretty good again right up to “Go Down, Moses” on page 85. that and my lessons have made me realize how much in terms of technique the Alfred book seems to be missing.Scarborough Fair * Singin' in the Rain * Standing in the Need of Prayer * Tisket, a Tasket * Waltz Time * What Can I Share * When the Saints Go Marching In * Why Am I Blue? I want to briefly mention that there’s a third book in the Adult series, but I don’t have it so I can’t speak to its content. We usually give up and move on around page 100 (the piece “Singin’ in the Rain”), since by that point most people are itching for a new book to start tackling.
