About this deal

This book was brilliant in that it showed the judgement and pressures of teenage pregnancy in the 1960's, then cleverly linking back to present date with an article at the end about sexual consent in the present day.

It depicts with clarity the distress of young mothers deprived of the chance to keep their babies, and the wall of social condemnation confronting these women. My heart ached at how one moment Laura is navigating life, family and friendship as an adoloescent and the next she's whisked off to a home. Her novels have been adapted numerous times for television, and commonly deal with such difficult topics as adoption, divorce, and mental illness.A heartbreaking, compelling and timely story for older readers about teen pregnancy and its consequences, family trouble and unlikely friendships, set in 1960. There has always been something so special and comforting about her writing that I think few other authors match. The book ends up focusing on the bond between mothers and babies, and whilst I didn’t fully believe that Laura had the capacity for some of the realisations she had, I do think that could just be my scepticism. She also takes Laura and her baby in, since her parents won't let her come home unless she gives the baby up.

Fiery Redhead: Averted with both Moira, who is a sweet tempered girl from an entire family of redheads and with Sarah, who is somewhat smug and pious but never once loses her temper. They were my safety blanket and I look back on them with fondness and comfort , and was eager to read one now I’m in my early 30s with the view of picking up from where I left off but my goodness this book is not a comfort blanket. This is set in an era that she was familiar with (her published journals were a great read) and tells the story of how young, unwed mothers were treated by society. A heartbreaking, compelling and timely story for older readers about teen pregnancy, family trouble and unlikely friendships, set in 1960.

It's 1960 and Laura is a fourteen year old girl who is just trying to be a normal teenager despite her overprotective mother. G-Rated Sex: Nothing really seems to happen between Laura and Leon; she mentions him pulling down her clothes and touching her but she pushes him away before he can seemingly do anything. Wilson's writing style is warm and despite the heavy subject matter there are lots of charming and humorous moments throughout the story.
