"A study of a new type of swab for the environmental monitoring of isolators and cleanrooms". European Journal of Parenteral & Pharmaceutical Sciences. 16 (2): 42–48. The reasons to avoid using cotton buds are numerous. Inserting cotton buds into the outer ear can break and damage the sensitive and delicate skin in the ear canal, resulting in bleeding, irritation, ear infections and other complications which can cause temporary, or in severe cases, permanent hearing loss. In some cases, part of the tip of the cotton swab may come off inside your ear. This can lead to feelings of discomfort, fullness, or pain. In some cases, hearing loss can occur.

Medical-type swabs are often used to take microbiological cultures. The swabs are rubbed onto or into the infected area, then wiped across the culture medium, such as an agar plate, where bacteria from the swab may grow. They are also used to take DNA samples, most commonly by scraping cells from the inner cheek in the case of humans. They can be used to apply medicines to a targeted area, to selectively remove substances from a targeted area, or to apply cleaning substances like Betadine. They are also used as an applicator for various cosmetics, ointments, and other substances. Earwax is actually helpful to your ears. It keeps them from getting too dry, traps dirt, and prevents bacteria from reaching deeper into your ear. While Q-tips weren’t originally designed to be used for gently cleaning babies’ outer ears, eyes and bellybuttons in the bath, when they hit the market in the 1920’s they were advertised primarily for ear care. Their size, shape and soft cotton tips made them seem perfect for cleaning in the inner ear canal, and by the time medical professionals had warned the public in the 1970’s against inserting them into your ear, use of Q-tips to clean the inner ear was so popular it became hard to stop. Why are cotton buds bad for your ears? The use of cotton swabs in the ear canal has no associated medical benefits and poses definite medical risks. [11] [12] [13] [14] Cerumen (ear wax) is a naturally occurring, normally extruded, product of the external auditory canal that protects the skin inside the ear, serves beneficial lubrication and cleaning functions, and provides some protection from bacteria, fungi, insects, and water. Dr. Wong: Earwax, also known as cerumen, is a natural substance that your body makes and has many beneficial properties—it is slightly acidic, which helps fight bacteria and fungus in the ear, and it's slightly oily, which provides a waterproof barrier for the ear canal skin. Combating Plastics in Monaco: On 1 January, Plastic Cotton Buds, Cups, Cutlery and Plates wereBanned". 6 January 2020. Plastic cotton swabs are often flushed down the toilet, increasing the risk of marine pollution. The handles were first made of wood, then made of rolled paper, which is still most common (although tubular plastic is also used). They are often sold in large quantities, 100 or more to a container.Instead, try putting 2-3 drops of olive oil into your ear, ideally at night, for 2 nights. DIRTY COTTON BUDS INSIDE THE BOX

Yes! Cotton buds were designed in 1923 by Leo Gerstenzang, to help his wife clean their baby’s ears. They were originally called Q-Tips, the ‘Q’ indicating quality. However in the early 1970’s concerns were raised with reports of cotton buds causing perforation of the eardrum and impacted earwax in several cases. Many manufacturers then started to advise against using them for cleaning the ears and removing earwax and continue to do so today, promoting them instead for applying creams, make-up and drying wet skin between a baby’s fingers or toes. Despite this and many subsequent studies which have highlighted the same dangers, people still make the mistake of using cotton buds today to try and remove earwax from the ear canal. So what should I use to clean my ears? Another solution to removing excess earwax is to use olive oil or other gentle mineral oils. Apply a few drops of the oil of your choice to your ear using an ear dropper and leave it to be absorbed. Should I get my ears cleaned professionally instead? Listen to the ear doctors. ENT UK, the association for ear, nose and throat doctors, does not recommend the irrigation method at all.
