The Madrigal's gifts aren't actually random, they're born from their own personal personalities, traits and passions. There's a few small toucan and tiger details are scattered around before we find out Antonio's official gift, including the details on Mirabel's dress, Antonio's dinner plate and on the gift box that Mirabel gives him before his ceremony. Yup, and the last one, Saludos Amigos, was made in 1942! Disney wanted to have a Spanish title because the word doesn't directly translate, and they didn't want to lose any of the meaning with an English title. As people around Mirabel are singing her name repeatedly, Abuela shouts 'Mirabel' and everything stops. A very similar moment happens with Vanessa in 'It Won't Be Long Now'. We love a Lin-Manuel Miranda musical reference! Like the X-Men, almost every member of the Madrigal family is blessed with their own unique power: Luisa (Jessica Darrow) is strong enough to lift anything, while Isabela (Diane Guerrero) can make beautiful flowers bloom all around her.Well, not the magic house bit, but the animators and filmmakers made sure to put lots of their own experiences and feelings into the film to make sure it felt authentically Colombian. Encanto | Disney Studios | Clark Spencer, Yvett Merino | Byron Howard, Jared Bush 4. It's Disney's 60th animated film Waiting on a Miracle', which is sung by Mirabel, is written in a 3/4 time signature, while the rest are in 4/4. Lin-Manuel Miranda explained to The Washington Post that that was done to show that Mirabel is in a “different rhythmic universe than the rest of her family”. It was also inspired by local Colombian musicians during a research trip. Like Agustin, it seems that he took his wife's surname, rather than per the usual marriage customs in Colombia and other Spanish-speaking countries where both of them keep their own surnames. Félix first appears waking up and joining his family for a stroll in the village. In " The Family Madrigal", Félix is introduced, along with his brother-in-law Agustín, by Mirabel. As Mirabel explains that he became part of the family by marrying Pepa, Félix shares a kiss with his wife. Since the day was also his younger son Antonio's fifth birthday and gift ceremony, Felix soon returned home to help prepare for the celebration. As Pepa became increasingly anxious about the ceremony, Félix tried to remind her that the tornado she was stirring up was messing up the flowers. Isabela appeared and helped Pepa calm down by giving her a bouquet of roses, while Félix called her "our angel" and Pepa thanks him. Later on Félix went out to look for Antonio, who had hidden because of the anxiety of the ceremony.

The most famous work of art to come out of Colombia (and a strong contender for the designation of greatest novel ever written) is Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, and the studio’s new film Encanto pays homage to that magical realist masterwork with its story of a multi-generational family blessed by wonderful enchantments.

There's several obvious Disney references in the film, including Bruno's 'Let It Go' lyric, but it's the subtle reference to the plant growing in the boot that you might have missed. Due to his charming demeanor, Félix has always been on good terms to Abuela Alma in his younger years, which earned her immediate approval when he and Pepa fell in love and got married. [9] There was also a Dr. John Jamieson that bought an umbrella in Paris in the early 1780s and when he returned to Glasgow, he remarked that “he was stared at with his umbrella.”[8] Many people thought them “a perfect phenomenon” and did not understand exactly how they worked. One man fortunate enough to borrow a newfangled umbrella from a friend on a rainy day, soon found he could not enter his residence with it because the umbrella was too wide. He returned it to his friend stating “this’ll never do; there’s nae a door in a’ my house that’ll tak it in.”[9] It can also be translated as 'Spell', 'Magic' or 'Enchantment', and is a reference to the magical family it follows! At some point in his life, Félix met a woman named Pepa and affectionately helped her calm down when she was in a bad mood, making them both fall in love. Felix became one of the few people who gets along with Abuela Alma and over time became close to her. Unlike Abuela's bad relationship with Agustín, Alma immediately accepted Félix as part of the Madrigals and was completely in agreement that he and Pepa would fall in love. The small detail can be seen just after Antonio's gift is revealed. 10) And she also claps with her fingers because her hearing is sensitive. While he was born in Medellín, Colombia, the singer-songwriter has since gained global fame, performed around the world, and earned awards recognition from the Latin Grammys, the Billboard Music Awards, and the MTV VMAs. Despite his musical bona fides, however, Maluma doesn't sing all that much in "Encanto." He joins in on the group song "All of You" toward the end of the film, but doesn't have his own solo number. Instead, he focuses on voice acting, believably bringing his dashing character to life in both the English and Spanish language versions of the film. The next morning, Félix appeared to scold Camilo for pretending to be his sister to get more food for breakfast. As the family sat down to eat, he calming Pepa when she became annoyed at Mirabel for stealing her chair and giving Antonio a thumbs up for trying to use his new gift to help his Abuela. Later that day, Félix overheard Pepa and Mirabel talking about Bruno. Félix burst in dramatically to tell Mirabel all about Bruno's powers, over his wife's objections. Félix told Mirabel that if Bruno prophesied that something terrible would happen, there was no changing it. As Pepa scolded both of them, reminding them that they don't talk about Bruno, Félix wrapped an arm around her waist and they began to tell about Bruno's teasing on her wedding day. In " We Don't Talk About Bruno" Felix constantly interrupted his wife to talk and kept his part of the conversation playful, saying that he considered his wedding to be a joyous day in spite of the weather and joining the verses of his other relatives. Originally the Madrigal family had even more members with even more special powers, including a child who could tell fortunes, a girl with power over fire, and twins who could project auras! However, since the Madrigal clan was already pretty big (and therefore very complex for the animators) the filmmakers decided to cut these characters. It’s hard to miss the rhyme between “Encanto,” which is both the title of the film and a word often used by its characters to refer to the miracle that made a home for them deep in the mountains, and “Macondo,” the town founded by Marquez’s unforgettable Buendia family in the middle of the jungle.
