Ronnie certainly has the vocal chops, if not the same everyman charm, to handle the Osbourne classics, but his incessant banter between (and during! This album was bought for me as a birthday gift by one of my best friends when I was in high school.

I finally opened this up and found time to check it out and I’m honestly blown away by this 40th anniversary edition double LP. Geezer, Tony, Ronnie James Dio, and Vinny as Black Sabbath created some perennially popular rock / metal music in the years between 1980 and 2009, and performed many memorably exciting live shows, leaving fans with happy memories of a band that never delivered less than 100% on stage or on record. Iommi, in his drug-addled state, misunderstood what he was being told and came to the conclusion that Dio was not only mixing the album without him, but was trying to push his own vocals much too prominently in the mix.The US cassette release has, as its first side, sides 1 and almost all of 2 except for "Iron Man" which fades out at end of Side 1. Ok, some gripes,the drums are very low in the mix plus the audience is mega distant, but the power of the guitar and bass wall of crunch is just beautiful. War Pigs" contains a drum solo from Vinny Appice, and "Heaven and Hell" contains a guitar solo from Tony Iommi.Iommi now is more on the right side, aggressive and detailed (not sounding like a bootleg distant,muffled and on the center) , keyboards now low on the mix on the left, snare drums now sounds very present and strong (not distant and low as the original), Geezer storming bass on center, and finally Dios' voice clearer than ever, much better than the original. In the liner notes to The Rules of Hell, Appice states, "I knew things were coming to a close from some of the things that were happening on the road. At the time, Sharon was severely at odds with her father Don Arden, who was managing Sabbath and was attempting to steer Osbourne away from his deal with Arden's label, Jet, and on to a new deal with Jet's distribution company, CBS. I knew it would be better than the other two and put it on the stereo and was really pleased to hear (properly) Sabbath live. Geezer Butler has referred to this album a few times in interviews as “Live in the Studio Evil”, a reference to a lot of the overdubs on it. The extra space allowed for the inclusion of War Pigs from the vinyl version, which is not on the original Vertigo print. As usual this “super deluxe” box set is filled with all manners of Dio era Sabbath goodies, poster, book and I believe a tour booklet? In his autobiography, Iommi confesses that he was "unpleasantly surprised" that Osbourne had included only Sabbath songs and speculates "I think putting out the live album like that was down to Sharon (Osbourne, Ozzy's wife and manager), trying to put the cat among the pigeons. After that there was no point due to Dio’s ageing voice (which was still great, but not matching a decade ago) There you have the REAL story. I think we were probably riding quite high on the Heaven and Hell success, and so we ended up playing really, really well. I’ve owned a Japanese pressing of this for sometime now and I always believed that these recordings could never sound any better until I listened to this presentation. It included the original album remastered and a remix of the album from the original analogue master tapes by longtime band associate Wyn Davis across four compact discs and four LPs.
