Both dice (six and eight-sided) are rolled and a smoke marker is placed on the corresponding space on the board. You are trying to save people from a burning building where you might have to open/close doors, break through walls or fight off explosions. So instead of colored bowling-pin-shaped units, I get to play with colored firefighter-shaped units. But once they’ve been introduced to how to play, they may even be fine to tackle it without your help. If the fire causes too much destruction to the house or reaches four of the family members, then all of the players have lost.Firefighters are never killed, but they may be injured and sent back to the Ambulance, essentially putting them out of action until they can get back into the building. The objective is for players to work together to rescue people and animals from a burning building before it collapses. A firefighter is no help if they run into an inferno and just become another body to save, but if they use the tools available to them to create a safe avenue then they can save lives, though perhaps not everyone. As the game goes on, certain spots become “hot spots” which means if you roll them, you add fire and then roll AGAIN, and that cycle repeats if you keep rolling hot spots.

Each space in the grid depicts coordinates which correspond to the roll of both six and eight-sided dice. It includes two additional maps (one on each side of the included board): Brownstone, an urban duplex apartment; and High Rise, an office building introducing elevator spaces, light walls and heavily reinforced walls. Because a victim can never enter a hex containing a Fire marker, Red will have to battle his way out. But that’s not the case because the fire also spreads a lot quicker when everyone’s rolling for fire each turn.There are 30 damage tokens for the walls, and if they all run out, the house collapses and you lose.

This expansion comes with its own box and includes firefighter-specific miniatures with colored bases.

There’s no sense beating around the bush – Flash Point: Fire Rescue is a great cooperative board game for families!

The team has only seconds to assess the situation and devise a plan of attack – then you spring into action like the trained professionals you are. In this review I will try to cover the mechanics of the base game, the good points, the bad points and whether this might be one for you! It could be just another Smoke space, or it could be an inferno that kills one or more of your helpless victims.

As long as you understand how each action works, you can learn how to play Flash Point (especially the “family” version) very quickly.
