But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. The journey begins almost a decade earlier. Many readers will be familiar with Raynor’s spellbinding debut, The Salt Path, which documented her and Moth’s experiences along a 630-mile stretch of windswept and sea-lashed coastline. Hello, lovely.’ The waitress immediately recognises Raynor Winn, her mound of blonde hair a calling card here in Cornwall, where she has in recent years become a local celebrity. As well as a portrait of a telepathic marriage of true minds, and a snapshot of a fretful island, this is a soaring lament and a tub-thumping tirade - for all that is being lost, for all that may yet be saved' TELEGRAPH

The catalyst came in early 2021 when Moth collapsed at home on the farm. The raw anguish of this incident is still palpable as Raynor reflects on it now. “It was this moment when Moth’s health was at such an all-time low and he was thinking that maybe we were getting close to the end,” she says. Landlines by Raynor Winn review – back on the trail

It was Moth. He had somehow passed her on the path. Raynor felt a strength and sureness in his grip that she hadn’t since they forded the glacial meltwaters of an Icelandic river a few years earlier. It almost felt like a party on a path because everyone had their own joy that they were bringing to it. The West Highland Way was like a conveyor belt of humanity.” I put another log on the stove and move the kettle to the hotplate, thinking about tea and the work waiting to be done, about the end of one year and the beginning of the next, about change and the need to adapt. This year will mark a decade since my life changed with such abrupt force that the idea of adapting seemed impossible, ten years since my world was torn apart. As someone who enjoys walking I truly admire what Raynor and Moth have done. As someone who also detests midges, sore feet and heavy rain, I read most of this book feeling I was reading about some kind of personal hell. This book is a poignant and polished account and is an inspiring story of true love. Winn’s prose here is powerful, she excels at description, and her apt metaphors are all rooted in nature. This is an inspiring read, and reminds us that there really is salvation in nature, movement, and the out-of-doors.

I loved following the journey, and the descriptions of the country. However, I sometimes found the author's tone and opinions difficult. Not only the fairly regular remarks about Brexit but I found myself annoyed by her "I told you so" repetitions when Moth had done something silly. It had worked when we were on the South West Coast Path in ways that we had been told were impossible,” she says. “It was the only hope we had. It was the only thing that had helped his health: climbing, nature and walking as much as we possibly could. Newly-married Joss Stone is emotional as she takes a bow at the premiere of her new musical The Time Traveller's Wife - after show left critics divided I met my husband Moth when I was a teenager, looking up through a crowd of heads in the college canteen to see a man with astonishing blue eyes dipping a Mars bar in a cup of tea. In that instant, I knew he was the one for me.
