About this deal

I haven't seen the last 4 episodes, and the first volume of the biography only goes until victory in the Falklands War in 1982 - but there is no doubt that, if it wasn't for Mrs Thatcher, the UK wouldn't have risen out of the socialist doldrums of the 1960/1970's to again be a relevant power in the world and help defeat the Soviet Union in the Cold War as well. The publishing world believed that Mark Thatcher had got the worst of both worlds by demanding too much at first and then losing the prime moment by dithering in the negotiations while the value of the memoirs declined. Or would you argue that it is perennially important and can be used to criticise the kind of authoritarian capitalism that we see now? There’s something about very big polities that have different cultures in them, that means they don’t last. It was as education minister that Mrs Thatcher developed a rather crude nickname of “Maggie Thatcher – the milk snatcher” This was due to her policy as education secretary to end free school milk.

Enver Hoxha used to say, when things were getting rough in Tirana, ‘Never forget that, together with the Chinese, we Albanians have a quarter of the world’s population.

With unequaled authority and dramatic detail, the first volume of Charles Moore’s authorized biography of Margaret Thatcher reveals as never before the early life, rise to power, and first years as prime minister of the woman who transformed Britain and the world in the late twentieth century. She offers a riveting firsthand history of the major events, the crises and triumphs, during her eleven years as prime minister, including the Falklands War, the Brighton hotel bombing, the Westland affair, the final years of the Cold War, and her unprecedented three election victories.

I duly came up with a list mixing moderately literati fiction with frothy gay fun, and at last check in, 20 years on, he's on about number six. Charles Moore's authorised, and definitely foot-thick, Thatcher biog probably isn't for Andrew but its very size is one of the things about Thatcher - even in death she just won't go quietly. Ayn Rand said that the difference between the welfare state and a totalitarian state is “only a matter of time.

It dealt purely with sovereignty, with the issue of the lack of democracy, and the inability of people to vote in a general election and thereby to affect the future of their country in matters connected to Europe. But, if you want to understand the whole phenomenon of Thatcherism, which is not just what she did but also what everyone tried to prevent her from doing, you have to read Hugo’s book.

Margaret Thatcher: The Autobiography - Goodreads

Yet at moments of crisis, she occasionally adopted a crab-like attitude of trying to side-step decision making, whilst showing a face of unbroken determination to the outside world.

It is one of the beneficial coincidences of history that she and Reagan served during much of the same time and shared a world view fostering democratic capitalism and fighting socialism and communism to win the Cold War.
