About this deal

You might struggle a bit more to accommodate its height. While it has a relatively small footprint, measuring just 7.6″ in diameter, it is towering 15.6″ tall. It fits under upper cupboards but doesn’t leave much room to spare to get the lid on and off and add beans to the hopper. And this is a single-dosing grinder, so adding beans to the hopper is something you’ll be doing regularly. That’s a substantial amount of cash for a home user, so it’s difficult to say whether the extra money is worth it to you. The problems with the Fellow Ode are a) grind retention, b) static issues, b) bean feeding, and d) an inability to grind fine enough for most finer-grind applications. I’ve tested and seen this first hand.

The metal grounds bin exemplifies the solidity. On the scale, it weighs in at 400 grams, which alone is more substantial than the Porlex mini grinder! The Wilfa Uniform grinder is far from the cheapest on the market, but it is competitively priced given its quality, especially if you skip the smart scale.

Things got better from there. Even as things went sideways with espresso, they noted that it was a normal-retention grinder, meaning if you grind 18 grams of beans, you get close to 18 grams of grounds out of it. Sometimes, particularly with flat-burr grinders where gravity isn't helping, grounds get lost inside the machine or in the grounds bin, which means you're losing money every time you grind. There's even a grinder called the Niche Zero designed to leave (or retain) no grounds in the machine. The grinder is easy to use, seems like it’s built to last, and looks pretty neat. The main downside is the weird inclusion of the Bluetooth scale. A contentious point when it comes to the Wilfa Uniform is the inclusion of the built-in Bluetooth scale in the lid. Of course! In fact, the Fellow Ode Gen 2 is ideal for a whole range of filter methods - from the finest pour-overs to coarse French Press and cupping. In total, it boasts 31 steps to choose from, so you can really focus on dilling in each new coffee. Plus, it's quiet. The Ode Gen 2 was designed with quietness in mind, so your brewing ritual can be properly peaceful. Remember how I mentioned that this grinder is slow? To some extent, that is by design. Wilfa and Wendelboe decided to err on the side of a slower motor to avoid heating the beans, and this avoids any off or burnt tasting notes as a result of the grind. What about espresso?

That grinder is the Wilfa Uniform. It’s been out in Europe for several years now, and it’s almost universally loved (including the Hoff). Meanwhile, us poor slobs living on 110V power systems have been eyeing it with a certain amount of coffee gear lust.

The Niche Zero is an espresso-primary grinder with a relatively small single dose hopper. It has a simple on/off switch for operation, and a wide range of grind settings. From the get-go it was designed as a zero retention grinder and primarily for espresso use, but it is quite capable of grinding for siphon, V60, and Chemex. The grinder has only one on/off button. The device switches of automatically, when it “feels” there are no more coffee beans in the hopper. The Ode Brew Grinder Gen 2 focuses on getting the very best from your filter coffee. Its burr set and motor means that unfortunately, it's not suitable for espresso brewing. The new Fellow Opus takes on that responsibility instead, as well as being adaptable to a whole range of other brew methods. We'd also recommend the Eureka Mignon Specialitaas a great all-rounder which handles espresso very well. If espresso isn't on your mind, the Ode Gen 2 is a step up for folks who really want to experience all that a premium coffee grinder can offer. Superkop Lever Espresso Machine One of the most unique espresso makers currently on the market, this is our First Look at the Superkop ratchet lever espresso machine. The Wilfa Svart Uniform is a stellar grinder. I feel like my morning coffee tastes more like ‘coffee shop’ rather than homebrew compared to before. I can go for a higher extraction percentage without getting undesirable flavors. After getting this grinder, I have found myself gravitating towards a different brewing style and brew ratio. The wait is now over: the highly anticipated, and kinda lusted after Wilfa Uniform Grinder is now here in North America in a 110V version, and it’s being imported by Lardera Coffee. You sacrifice some for this. First, the Wilfa Uniform is less than half the speed of the Vario+, at around 0.8g/sec output. There’s no timers, no presets, no nothing, but given that it is a single dose grinder, this isn’t a big issue. The auto-off feature also makes up for this. The Wilfa Uniform seems to come ahead in offering more clarity and flavour profile notes in a coffee when both grinders are used with nearly identical grind fineness levels and are brewed in an identical manner.

Even though this model is equipped with a set of 58 mm flat steel burrs it is designed specifically with manual brewing in mind, rather than espresso. This is rather uncommon in the world of home coffee grinders where smaller (and often cheaper) conical burrs are the standard for brew grinders.Fellow haven't stood still though, and the new Ode Brew Grinder (Gen 2) claims to take things to the next level. But is it worth the upgrade? We've been able to get some hands-on time with the new Fellow Ode 2 Brew Grinder, and we're here to share our thoughts with you.
