About this deal

In Hawaiian religion, Māui is a culture hero and ancient chief who appears in several different genealogies. In the Kumulipo he is the son of ʻAkalana and his wife Hina-a-ke-ahi ( Hina). This couple has four sons, Māui-mua, Māui-waena, Māui-kiʻikiʻi and Māui-a-kalana. Māui-a-kalana's wife is named Hinakealohaila; his son is Nanamaoa. Māui is one of the Kupua. His name is the same as that of the Hawaiian island Maui, although native tradition holds that it is not named for him directly, but instead named after the son of the Hawaiʻiloa ("discoverer of Hawaiʻi", who was named after Māui himself). After Māui had fished up the islands, he began to wonder what was actually on these islands. He then traveled to the different islands and realised that they were all inhabitable. There were kapa houses but with no one living inside of them. The Ahupua'a was completely deserted, with no one inhabiting it at all. Grace, Wiremu (2016). "How Māui brought fire to the world". One of the most recognizable and iconic symbols in Polynesian culture is the fish hook symbol. The fish hook symbol or makau and is often carved out of various materials. These include bone, coral, jade, koa wood, or even turtle shells. But what does the fish hook symbolize? Paulin, Chris (2009). "Porotaka hei matau - a traditional Maori tool?". Māui learned a lot of new lessons while visiting these new islands, so he decided to return home and live with respect to the fashion of the new houses he had seen on the islands. Māui then pursued Hina and made her his wife. She was living in a thatched house at the time, of which she took very good care. Modern fish hooks, which were once almost solely made of whale bones but are now nearly entirely made of more prominent and ethically produced cattle bones. There are some exceptions, though; occasionally, one can carve hooks out of whale bones that have washed up on the shore. Westervelt, W.D. (2010). Legends of Ma-ui: A demi god of Polynesia, and of his mother Hina. Honolulu, HI: The Hawaiian Gazette Co.I am a person who has high expectations in life and as a result am normally perpetually disappointed, so I did open the box with the expectation of being so - not this time!!! Fish hook symbols are now carved utilizing techniques which have been passed down over the generations. Hooks are created using bone and koa wood, which has a rich golden hue and beautiful grain patterns. After carving the hook shape, artisans add intricate details into the hooks, creating one of a kind designs for each wearer. But Māui held tight to his line, and slowly a giant fish was pulled to the surface. The brothers huddled in the waka shivering with fright. The giant fish towered over their small canoe. For the past four decades, artist and craftsman Gary Eoff has been handcrafting detailed Native Hawaiian artifacts—gourds ( ipu), fish hooks ( makau), basket fish traps ( hina‘i) and fishing lures—from his home in Kona on Hawai‘i Island. Inspired by the voyaging traditions of early Hawaiian culture, their use of natural materials, and the aesthetics of their meaningful artwork, he creates authentic, museum-quality Hawaiian implements and artifacts while staying true to the materials and processes used by Hawaiian artisans from centuries ago.

M4 or NGC6121 (Bennett 75, mag. 5.9, size 26'), is described by Dreyer as an open cluster. We now call it a loose globular. He also describes a bar of 8-10 stars across the center of the cluster. This is visible in fairly small instruments (I have seen it with a 3"). He also called it extremely rich (for an open cluster). It is actually rather star poor for a globular. It is located 1.3° west of Antares. These fish hooks were traditionally hand-carved from whale bones by fisherman as a tribute to the fact that the sea was a beautiful place and provided for all necessities, allowing the traditional Hawaiian people to be self-sufficient. Fishermen started making hooks out of wood, shells, precious stones, or even cattle bones once whales were declared a protected species. JPEG. NGC6318 (Bennett 91a) is a mag. 11.8 open cluster described as fairly large (4'), rich in stars, round, gradually brighter middle, and containing stars of magnitude 12 to 14. This cluster begins to resolve in a 6", but a 10" doubles the cluster's size from the diameter listed, and reveals a little north-south elongation. The craftsmanship is of the highest quality, you have achieved nice definition in the carving of the tattoo symbols while still keeping it looking hand carved. I am very impressed. For the Māori, the hei matau is taonga (a cultural treasure). It represents not only their land, but also prosperity, fertility, and safe passage over water. They also denote the importance of fishing to Māori, and their relationship to Tangaroa god of the sea.I have come to fish because Murirangawhenua said I would be a great fisherman.
