Talisker has retained the five still set-up and continues to produce a highly individual new make which mixessmoke, fruit, sulphur, salt and pepper. The malt is medium-peated, the worts clear, the fermentation long. It is in distillation that things go slightly strange.I’m also quite relieved that I’ve managed to finally review it before running out and I plan on finishing it tonight to celebrate! Finish: Smoke pops up more on the finish, with sweetness slowly fading to biscuity wood (chocolate digestives).

The opening is an echo of the nose with rich marmalade overtones that are contrasting by crisp brine and oozing salted caramel. Shortly afterwards, the seaside connotations are reinforced by a hint of iodine, which is softened by voluptuous dark chocolate and ashy creosote. This Talisker has some nice roughness combined to sweetness, that brings out the cult movie Slap Shot into my mind. In my opinion, Slap Shot is the greatest sports movie ever made. Like Talisker Port Ruighe, it isn't very well recognized. Nose: Loads of sweet, honeyed smoke (smoked ham), oranges (marmalade), a hint of berries, fresh sea air - delicious! That smoke is so sweet and rich. With time in the glass, a toffee note emerges. I could nose this all day. Definitely appeals to me. Finish: Drying smoke, peat, spices and more traces of red fruit (berries). Not overly long, but very pleasant nonetheless. The sea trade was crucial to the rise in the global popularity of Portuguese wine. In the late 18th century, the relationship between England and France was a fraught one. Colbert, first minister of Louis XIV set out to restrict the import of English goods into France. In retaliation, Charles II of England banned French wines. First released in 2013, Port Ruighe was the second NAS bottle from Talisker (Talisker Storm was the first) and since then many others followed, such as the Talisker 57 North for instance. Port Ruighe has matured in both American and European refill oak casks before being finished in Ruby Port casks. Bottled at a strength of 45.8% ABV. Talisker Port Ruighe tasting notes:

Nothing in the Terms shall exclude or limit our liability for fraudulent misrepresentation or for death or personal injury resulting from gross negligence or willful misconduct by us. Palate: Syrupy body. Very hot, at first, but resolves slowly into heavy notes of rhubarb, smoked salt, earthy peat, and caramel malt. The port is more readily detectable here, with light red fruits and a slight tartness.

Some putty and dusty notes. Reveals bandagey, Jaffa cake and bramble aromas with time in the glass. In terms of its appropriate use for different occasions, this is a wonderfully versatile whisky. Indeed, it’s something that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed sipping alone on a quiet evening with a cigar. However, it’s an excellent choice for special events or after a big dinner with friends.
