From what I understand, the company is looking at potentially upgrading their insole to leather, but what’s used now works just fine and if needed down the road I can just use an insert.The quality of the materials, and the construction, are easily on par with the last few pairs of Red Wings and Carolina Boots that I have had, and they remind me quite a bit of an old pair of Alicos that I wore for nearly 10 years. My boots are too new with the factory finish to take the wax right now, so tried it on my misses boots which where gagging for a feed. I would prefer if Jim Green sewed the rubber sole to the midsole, as is done with some boots, but I can understand if they dont want to stray from their current design. The leather definitely absorbs some water, which increases weight, but if the leather is well maintained, it should keep your feet reasonably dry for years to come.

The bootmakers will recommend their own brand of wax first but whether the boots are made by Brasher, Mendl, Scarpa or Zamberlan they will all, also recommend Nikwax. There is a lot of for and against arguments for neatsfoot oil especially where new boots are concerned.
