About this deal

The other players are secretly dealt their role cards which determine whether they are good or bad spirits, changing sides as the game goes on. When you think of party games, you usually think of loud music, red cups, and pookah shells. What you don’t think of is being blindfolded while your friends yell random words at you, which is exactly what When I Dream brings to the table. Spyfall arguably revitalised the genre, though games like Mafia and Werewolf have been around a long time in one guise or another. But I have a dirty secret - I don't like Spyfall. Despite this I'm still excited for what When I Dream promises to bring to the table, and the ways it will hopefully avoid my Spyfall bias. When I Scheme... Likewise, group dynamics established by individual personalities and existing relationships amongst players add further nuance to proceedings. Fairies and dreamers will find anecdotal references to shared experiences particularly useful in boosting each other's scores, whilst boogeymen can disrupt this type of play by subtly twisting words and their associated meanings. Opportunistic sandmen will find themselves having to rapidly switch roles throughout the round as they desperately try to maintain a balance between correct and incorrect elements. This may seem chaotic at first but after a few rounds you’ll realise that the game is at its best once everyone starts to relax and feed off of each other's ideas and energy organically.

Players who are good spirits must aid the Dreamer by giving them clues to help them guess what their dreams are about. Those playing as naughty spirits are striving to make them guess wrong, and those who are playing as the sandman must aim to strike a balance between both. The player sitting to the left of the Dreamer becomes next round's Dreamer. They take the sleep mask and all of the Dream Spirit cards, including the one that was set aside. The game is played over the course of Night and Day. During the Night, one player will act as the Dreamer, and during the Day, the player will rehearse their Dream to the group. The Dreamer will shuffle the Spirit cards and deal one to each of the players. The players will look at their cards, ensuring that they stay hidden from the other players. The Dreamer can then put on the sleep mask. As far as components go, there are some great things in the box and some not so great. The cards are large and brightly illustrated, with 4 words per card (2 on each side, 1 on each end) that are cleverly designed so that only 1 word is visible during play. This is due to a fancy bed-shaped card holder that enhances the feel of the game, and a neatly organized board that indicates where to put right and wrong guesses. Scoring reminders are printed on the board as well. Also, the blindfold has a fun little design on it and should fit most people.Tournaments: Game developers have held international tournaments to encourage avid fans and competitors to play the game in their own area. Players must follow a specific set of rules defined in each tournament; and must adhere to an agreed-upon playing schedule. The winner is determined by who can score the most points across multiple rounds of play. The game is quite fun, quite original, and contains very high quality components. The replayability of this game is quite good. The game is appropriate for all ages and can’t be played by up to 10 people. As you recount the dream, feel free to dramatize your dream. Be inspired by your answers to create a dreamy, funny, zany story...

And actually, it’s quite the “brain game” for the dreamer. They will be listening, guessing and deciphering who’s who, all while trying to remember every guess they give. It’s clear that When I Dream is a board game from the pre-COVID days. A simpler time when we weren’t so cautious about sharing masks or coughing into each other’s mouths. If there is a one-card difference, they score one point for each card on the side with the most cards. Before removing the sleep mask, the Dreamer recounts their dream and tries to mention all the Elements they guessed during the night. Party games do tend to be the marmite of the gaming world. They’re loved by many because they are light on rules but high on entertainment. They are also hated by the board game purists for not being challenging enough. If you are the former rather than the latter, then there’s a lot of fun to be had with this game. I’m Loyal Babes For balance, I should probably mention the parts I would definitely swipe left on. The first thing is the scenarios. In each round of the game, you are supposed to be in a certain place when you find out your crush’s secrets. I don’t think the scenarios add anything to the game, as often they’re irrelevant to the secrets you learn. It doesn’t matter when and how you find out someone voted for Trump, it’s just an automatic pass. It’s a shame that there are so few scorecards as well. I know that you can just reuse, but often erasing the same sheet over and over makes them worn and tatty. It gives the feeling that Dream Crush is around for a good time, not a long time. Swipe Left or Swipe Right?

I highly recommend you push past this first hill, because once you get rolling you’ll have a lot of fun. Being blindfolded (or covering your eyes or turning away, as some players just feel too uncomfortable with the mask) allows you to focus on the clues you are receiving and forget about other things. When you’re concentrating on hearing the words people say, you forget to think about everyone staring at you. Take a rest from the weariness of seeing things If a player does not follow the above restrictions, move on to the next card and place that dream card in front of that player as a penalty. The spirits will draw a card which depicts an element of the dream and take turns trying to communicate it to the dreamer using only one word each. Once the dreamer guesses, the spirits draw another card and this goes on until the time runs out. Overall, I have a lot of fun playing this game. It’s almost always a hit with a crowd. Plus, the creative artwork, with 220 illustrations, also adds to the experience and the production quality of the game. In When I Dream, every round a player is having a dream, while the other players take the roles of good and naughty spirits. Each round, the good spirits will try to give the dreamer as many elements of the dream as possible, while the naughty spirits try to confuse him.The whole round lasts 120 seconds in which the spirits are drawing “Dream” cards depicting a specific element of the dream, trying to describe them to the dreamer using one word each. The dreamer can guess what the “Dream” is at any time, with the spirits playing the to the good spirits team side if the guess was correct and in the naughty spirits pile if it was not. When I Dream is played over a series of rounds equal to the number of players. Each round is divided into 2 phases: Night and Day. Each night, one player-the Dreamer-tries to identify the Elements based on the clues that the other players give them.
