After reading Sandy Tolan’s well written book, The Lemon Tree, lemons will never taste the same to me. Seven years later, after countless hours in archives and on the ground in Israel, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and Bulgaria, the seed of a radio documentary had grown into The Lemon Tree, and the response to the book, and to a series of public talks and readings I’ve done in the months that followed, has again been astonishing.

The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle

In the wake of its lightning victory, Israel occupied Gaza, the West Bank, the Sinai Peninsula, and the Golan Heights. It was coming up on the 50th anniversary of the first Arab-Israeli war, and I wanted to find a human story that would evoke both narratives, as experienced by each side. In Israel, tension in Prime Minister Eshkol's cabinet had led to a rupture, forcing him to form a unity government with his more hawkish opposition critics.The story is compelling enough on its own, but Tolan interjects history throughout that I found illuminating and helpful. They jumped from airplanes, waded through swamps, slept on hard ground, ate snakes, and went without food for days. This tragedy is repeated in the meetings of Israeli and Palestinian parents whose sons have died in this interminable war. Although the tree would take several years to bear fruit, Ahmad believed in patience and thought he had time to see the tree flower.
