About this deal

Beautiful but accessible writing, thrilling action, a hint of magic and unforgettable characters are d elivered with wit, wisdom and heart in an enviably distinct voice. The Unadoptables – A book about five particular orphans at The Little Tulip Orphanage who are deemed 'unadoptable' by the matron that named them, Elinora Gassbeek.

We at Penguin Random House Australia acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the Traditional Custodians and the first storytellers of the lands on which we live and work. Half Dutch, half English, Hana Tooke grew up near Amsterdam and moved to the south of England at the age of twelve. The Unadoptables is an endearing middle grade adventure, of perseverance, determination and resilience. It’s a word we’ve had thrown at us like knives, it’s a word we’ve feared to be branded with, and it’s one that has defined us and our childhood.

Teaching children that to be adopted you have to be white (sorry, Egg), beautiful (sorry, Sem), ‘normal’ (sorry, Lotta and Fenna), well-behaved and well-mannered (sorry, Milou)… Imagine you are a child in the system – either in foster care or up for adoption – and you read this. Beloved novelist Witi Ihimaera has been in New Zealand classrooms for years and we have created some new teacher notes to celebrate 50+ years of Witi being a published author. a group of children who empower each other, see their own worth, and carve out their own story rather than be forced to conform to someone else’s. Egg was certainly the most challenging, as his experience is one which I (as a white European) can barely even begin to comprehend.

Thanks to Lotta's technical ingenuity, Egg's artistry, Fenna's culinary prowess, and Sem's needlework-assisted by clockmaker and dike warden Edda Finkelstein - it's almost home. The heavy front door closed with a thunderous thunk, rattling the windows and shutters to either side of it.When I first began writing this story, several people told me that five main characters were too many and that I should consider having three or four at most. I've always loved reading children's fiction for they have this wondrously cosy and endearing quality that much of adult fiction tend to lack. Half Dutch/English, Hana Tooke grew up near Amsterdam and moved to the south of England at the age of twelve. Sem climbed in and Milou followed quickly behind, careful to keep her eyes only on the round bucket, ignoring the height and the biting wind that stabbed like an icy dagger at her exposed skin. Meneer Rotman didn't count on the children being so inventive and resourceful, as they settle into their new life in an old abandoned windmill, once owned by Bram Poppenmaker, the maker of Milou's cat puppet. Matron Gassbeek is a horrendous woman, the children are impoverished and working until they're exhausted, a life of servitude and clasping onto what little possessions they have. But when a sinister sea captain threatens to tear the gang apart, a daring moonlit escape across the countryside is their only hopes of staying together. Sure signs that the creative wells are running dry at last, the Captain’s ninth, overstuffed outing both recycles a villain (see Book 4) and offers trendy anti-bullying wish fulfillment. Lotta, Egbert, Fenna, Sem and Milou’s story is about them challenging the prejudices and expectations of the nineteenth century. If you'd like to read more about the 'orphan trope' in children's books, try anartfulsequenceofwords.

Real readers review: The Unadoptables - Penguin Real readers review: The Unadoptables - Penguin

I loved the writing, the setting, the STUPENDOUS action scenes, how well-paced it was, with such drama, revelations, plot twists and the loveliest of final lines. Most people upset by the title are unlikely to have got much further, but some who read it are also angry about the content. The Unadoptables caught my eye because of its adorably whimsical cover, and I'm so glad to have read this wonderful tale of friendship and found family during this bleak and trying time.
