Would it be a push to call A Plague Tale: Innocence an overlooked gem? We don't think so; what Asobo Studio achieved on PlayStation 4 deserved a lot more recognition. The somewhat historical tale of Amicia and younger brother Hugo can hold its own amongst many of the greats, and while its stealth-based gameplay may prove formulaic for some, the 10-hour undertaking is a special one when taken as a whole. Let's hope then this upgraded PS5 version can be the game's true coming-out party.

A Plague Tale: Innocence was one of GameSpot's Best Games of 2019. The game captures sibling love remarkably well, putting you in the shoes of Amicia, a noble girl who must take care of her younger brother Hugo as the two try to survive 1348 France. On their journey, the two will come face-to-face with a country ravaged by the Hundreds Years' War, the French Inquisition, and the bubonic plague, the latter of which has been personified into a literal horde of ravenous rats. This is Asobo Studio the team who managed the technological wizardry of mapping the ENTIRE world onto console with Microsoft Flight Sim and pushed the aged Jaguar cores of last gen with A Plagues Tale's physics. Second, damn this game was such an unexpected action adventure thriller with an excellent story and awesome gameplay. I truly cannot express how much this game surprised me. One of the best aspects of A Plague Tale is its world, which has an ominous emptiness to it. Well, at least when it comes to living things that aren’t overwhelming waves of terrifying rats. It’s not uncommon to come across mass graves of those who died from the Plague, and in one particularly somber sequence you actually have to walk across an entire field of bodies. Most of the living that you come across want to kill Amicia, Hugo, and various companions that help you throughout their journey. This foreboding atmosphere matches the dreariness and depravity of the areas you’ll explore, from darkened forests to abandoned castles to ghostly villages to Inquisition camps, though they all look far more dangerous and daunting than they actually are.Crafting materials that make the alchemy skills are plentiful – a bit too plentiful, with no way to adjust the difficulty level. Because you can find more than enough supplies throughout each level, A Plague Tale never really encourages you to think about making your strategy for clearing a puzzle efficient. You can be careless and wasteful and still make it to the next area, where you’re certain to find more. Workbenches contain upgrades for your sling and abilities, which inevitably makes resource management even less important. A Plague Tale’s use of these crafting and skill systems isn’t time consuming or tedious, which I appreciate; that said, both features lower the stakes by making everything too convenient and removing the need to make tough decisions. One ally, Lucas, can stun enemies with his Stupifacio powder, while a soldier named Arnaud can be directed to confront enemies in open battle. Whichever character happens to be with you at a given point in the story is likely to influence your strategy when approaching certain obstacles, and that does wonders in terms of keeping its otherwise pretty by-the-numbers stealth slightly more interesting. That tale is aided by absolutely stunning graphics, music, and voice acting that just made me want to spend time exploring this ruined world and hanging out with my NPC allies. It’s really hard to overstate just how good Requiem looks and sounds, especially when it throws every ounce of processing power available to render a million rats barreling towards you – it almost made the subsequent night terrors worth it. My only gripe is that sometimes Requiem is so ambitious that my Xbox Series X struggled to keep up, and at times would freeze up for seconds at a time, especially when lots of rat shenanigans were happening on screen.
