The Moth Decoy is a long term solution which uses the same pheromone as the moth trap but instead of trapping and killing male clothes moths, it spreads pheromone around the male population using a special magic dust which stops the moths from mating. Okay, its not really magic dust, it’s a micronised natural wax powder with electrostatic properties but I think ‘magic dust’ has a better ring to it! We have also seen instances of bird nests under roof eaves and in chimneys being sources of infestation for our customers - think bird feathers as being a keratin-rich food source for clothes moth larvae.
The Traps will catch the adult male moths once they are active. As the moth season gets underway there will be more larvae pupating so as the weather gets warmer you will expect to see an increasing catch rate. Moth balls do kill moths in an enclosed environment such as closets and drawers but are meant to target the eggs and larvae of clothes moths. They will not work in the same way in an open space and will not affect adult flying moths unless they end up in the enclosed space with moth balls. To be clear, we do NOT recommend the use of naphthalene moth balls - they are highly toxic, carcinogenic and highly flammable. Is a Pheromone Moth Trap The Same as a Clothes Moth Trap? Also note that only fully mature adult males will be caught by clothes moth pheromone traps - juvenile males and all females are still potentially flying and it takes time for the breeding cycle to be broken. Clothes moths will only typically live for a month so you may see some activity for 4-5 weeks after putting the moths pheromone traps in place. Damage to Clothing - Moth Traps only part of the solution The traps will be active for 12 weeks after opening, enabling you to monitor for any moth presence, and they will help break the breeding cycle.Positioning of the Traps is important. They need to be 3-6 feet above carpet level. If you have any other moth deterrents placed nearby they can distract from the Traps. If you have seen damage to clothing and / or carpets, rugs and other home textiles, you may want to consider one of our Clothes Moth Killer or Carpet Moth Killer Kits to deal with the larval stage at the same time (our kits include moth traps). Our Traps attract the active adult male moths and will help break the breeding cycle. Depending on the stage in the moth life cycle It might be that the that the males have not yet hatched. The Traps are active for 12 weeks after opening.
Clothes moths only live for about a month - many customers do not realize that it's the moth larvae that hatch from their eggs that do the damage to precious home textiles and investment pieces. The adult flying moths do not even have mouths to feed - their sole purpose in their short life is to reproduce and lay eggs to carry on the life cycle. Ongoing Monitoring of Moths It is not the moths themselves that cause textile damage; it is their larvae (like small white caterpillars) that eat the keratin in natural animal-based fibres (think wool, cashmere, silk, mohair, soft leather, feathers etc.). The keratin is a protein which gives them nourishment and enables them to grow to the point of pupation where they turn into clothes moths. The larvae will hatch from the many eggs (up to 200) that the female clothes moth will lay on suitable food source (ideally an expensive cashmere sweater!).Once inside your home some moths - such as Clothes Moths or Carpet Moths can severely damage natural fibres (such as wool, silk or cotton) in carpets, clothes, fabrics, fur and even leather items. Moth caterpillars cause the damage by eating the protein (keratin) found in natural materials. This potentially puts your delicate items at particular risk of damage, especially if they are left stored in draws, wardrobes or under the bed for long periods of time. Insect traps are designed with the behaviour of the target insect in mind. Fly traps are designed with attractants that flies like and to be placed where flies are likely to be flying or landing. Clothes moths do not behave the same way as flies. They are shy creatures that seek dark undisturbed places where they can eat natural fibres and lay their eggs in peace. Clothes moth traps are pest control devices to monitor for clothes moth activity and to reduce the spread of clothes moths. It is still early on in the Moth Season. If you are seeing any evidence of holes in your clothing then it will be the Moth Larvae that are currently most active rather than the adult moths.
