About this deal

On the other hand, if you have some light coming in from a window you can set it to ISO 800 and get OUTSTANDING results! And, if you opt for the new ‘nostalgic' mode hidden within the scene mode options, a continual twist of the lens ring in either direction will progressively de-saturate the colours in your image to give the effect of ageing, with a full twist rendering the shot relayed on screen as black and white. Though Imatest tells us that the Canon S90 has over 8 stops of dynamic range, I found the highlights were too often blown.

The primary criticisms, beyond the general limitations of small sensor and small size, are that its ergonomics are lacking, and in particular that the rear dial moves too easily, changing exposure and often ruining photos. Now I do not base my conclusion of image quality on DXOMark's results, rather, I do my own testing of raw image quality from images taken in real world situations. The bottom line is that you always have to be attentive to the Canon S90's Control dial, except when shooting in Full Auto mode. The Control ring's excellent detents do tend to shake the view quite a bit as you turn it, so for me it's better left to less frequent operations, like ISO. This 10 megapixel sensor is then mated with Canon's latest Digic 4 processor to offer what the company describes as a dual anti-noise system.By default, this rear Control dial adjusts exposure compensation in Program mode, and it's so loose it does so all the time, whether you want it to or not. Canon's box-and-circle design is popular and often imitated, but this time the ring around the front lens element isn't just for decoration, it's a moving Control ring that you can program to perform one of several functions: Focus, ISO, Exposure, White Balance, and Zoom. Pure Color LCD screen of the S90 offers exceptional color and contrast for composing and reviewing photos and video. As I said of the G11, the Canon S90 is sometimes slow to focus, and often fails, but much of that impression was formed by the first unit we received, with serial number 0004.

It's more innocuous, but you still run the risk of accidentally changing the ISO, which I did frequently. A compact at ISO 80 is about as noisy as a DSLR at ISO 800, and the S90 gives me much cleaner, clearer files at ISO 80 than any other compact. Well, the one message that comes across loud and clear is that, for those who have eyed up the likes of Canon's G11 flagship bridge model but concluded that even that was too bulky for their purposes, the S90 offers a more portable - and let's face it, a whole lot cuter - alternative.

We spent a lot of time looking at this, enlarging the focus target to get this camera to stop looking at the back wall, to no avail. Inevitably some pixel fringing is in evidence between areas of high contrast in outdoor shots, but it's kept well within acceptable levels and wouldn't be noticed unless zooming in to scrutinize detail like we were. As I walked around shooting with the Canon S90 at an all-day family event, I kept remarking, "Man, this thing is frustrating. If you already own a DSLR, and possibly also a bridge camera, ownership of the S90 - more portable and with nearly as much on-board sophistication - starts to make a little more sense.
