About this deal

Despite mostly appearing in good health, some of the zone's animals carry high levels of cesium in their bodies, and birds in the area are 20 times more likely to have genetic mutations, according to a 2001 study in the journal Biological Conservation. Insects were among the hardest hit by the sudden spike in radiation levels, with significant reductions in their populations in the most irradiated regions, according to a 2009 study in the journal Biology Letters. On 22 March, the Ukrainian state agency responsible for the Chernobyl exclusion zone reported that Russian forces had destroyed a new laboratory at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The laboratory, which opened in 2015, worked to improve the management of radioactive waste, among other things. "The laboratory contained highly active samples and samples of radionuclides that are now in the hands of the enemy, which we hope will harm itself and not the civilized world", the agency said in its statement. In practice, BAM have found that barriers and signage can get misinterpreted (thinking the zone is no longer required) or ignored (thinking the risk of being in the zone is not significant), meaning that a person may walk into an exclusion zone or restricted zone, and therefore be exposed to harm. Twenty-five years after the Chernobyl meltdown, the scientific community has not yet been able to provide a clear understanding of the spectrum of ecological effects created by that radiological disaster." [81] However, some of Møller's research has been criticized as flawed. [82] Prior to his work at Chernobyl, Møller was accused of falsifying data in a 1998 paper about asymmetry in oak leaves, which he retracted in 2001. [83] [84] [85] In 2004, the Danish Committees on Scientific Dishonesty (DCSD) reported that Møller was guilty of "scientific dishonesty". The French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) subsequently concluded that there was insufficient evidence to establish either guilt or innocence. [83] [86] [87] Strongly held opinions about Møller and his work have contributed to the difficulty of reaching a scientific consensus on the effects of radiation on wildlife in the Exclusion Zone. This usually involves testing and certification by a 'third-party' certification body (known as a Notified Body) but manufacturers/suppliers can 'self-certify' equipment intended to be used in less hazardous explosive atmospheres. Once certified, the equipment is marked by the 'EX' symbol to identify it as such. The tags will transmit an offender’s location 24/7 to a specialist monitoring unit in Manchester and if an offender enters an excluded zone and breaches their conditions, they face being recalled to prison or returned to court. a b c d Mould, R. There are several different types of exclusion zone signs available, each of which is designed to communicate a specific message. Danger exclusion zone signs are used to indicate areas where the risks are life threatening, and access is strictly prohibited. Warning exclusion zone signs are used to indicate areas where caution should be exercised, and access may be restricted to certain individuals. No entry signs are used to prohibit access to specific areas or facilities. A construction exclusion zone sign restricts access of civilians to a construction zone.

Why is this important?

The new location monitoring capabilities will be in addition to the existing curfew tagging provision already in place, which monitors offenders on licence, community sentences and those on court bail. Around 60,000 individuals are subject to these tags each year. The potential benefits of using this new technology to better protect victims are recognised by the police service and we’re working closely with the Ministry of Justice to identify a suitable joint implementation programme.

Our exclusion zone signs are made of extremely durable materials and are designed to withstand the high-traffic areas in industrial or commercial environments. By following exclusion zone signs and other safety signs, you can help prevent accidents and injuries in the workplace. The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) place duties on employers to eliminate or control the risks from explosive atmospheres in the workplace.
