About this deal

After a breakup, we often reflect on the things left unsaid. When Lydia is found dead in a lake, her parents are reeling from the loss and the pain of the things they never told their daughter. This book explores the challenges of trying to truly know someone and our struggle to understand one another. The story is told in shifting perspectives of connecting characters as they share their past and present stories. This added suspense to the story as I pieced together how the characters were connected to the crime. There is a large cast of characters and at times I needed to use the helpful family tree that is included at the beginning of the book to sort them all out. The women in this woven story are so wonderful. Vulnerable and wary, curious and funny, loving and strong. But not that cliched type of strong that's so prevalent and often forced in fiction today. They aren't ~strong female characters~ because they were put through the wringer and made battered and broken for the reader's sake and that's why you're supposed to love them. No, they're strong because that's how they were raised and because of the strong bonds they have with each other. I fell in love with the women of this book. In fact, I think this is the book that has made me feel the most while reading it. Zu Beginn fiel es mir nicht leicht alle Frauen dieser Familie mit indigenen Wurzeln auseinander zu halten. Gut, dass es einen Stammbaum im Buch gibt.

All our bedrooms sleep up to two people and there is a mix of single and double beds in our accommodation Basically BREAK is probably the strangest book I've read thus far, but it's concept is crazy fascinating. And then when the book is all said and done it hits something so deep that it makes you wonder if it's an issue that really happening. This is a thought provoking book. I know that self-torture is out there, scary but true but to take it this far? Wow! Okay so there should be some pretty strong arguments against spam-reading a novel in one morning because you don't want to go to sleep but damn Break is something else. Sometimes I thought it was great and interesting, other times confusing, inaccurate and in its own special way irritating as hell - I mean I broke my hands over the summer and the cathartic release was momentary but the pain was agony and I have one hell of a high pain threshold yet this kid doesn't even take pain killers? The Break begins when a young mother witnesses an assault being committed outside of her house on a snowy, isolated strip of land in Winnipeg’s North End. While the story centers around this horrible crime, it is not a mystery novel, as it is clear to the reader who the perpetrator is early on. Instead, it is a novel about relationships, particularly the relationships between four generations of Indigenous women – Stella, Emily, Phoenix, Louisa, Cheryl, Zegwan, Paulina, and Flora – who are tied together by blood and friendship. Each woman’s perspective, as well as the perspective of a young Métis cop named Tommy, are woven together in a series of shifting narratives that recount the events leading up to the assault and the aftermath and healing that follow. The large cast of characters can be difficult to keep straight in the beginning, but their voices, stories, and relationships feel incredibly realistic, with each character baring their flaws, fears, struggles, and hopes in a way that resonated with me. Authored by a senior in high school, this debut novel would make a veteran author proud. Jonah worries about a lot. He worries about his parents, worries about the fact his baby brother cries all the time, but most of all he worries about his younger brother, Jessie, who is severe and life-threatening allergies. After being hurt in a car accident, Jonah has started trying to break every bone in his body to make himself stronger. He is helped by his best friend, Naomi, who films him breaking his bones. As Jonah moves deeper and deeper into pain and breaking, the question is who is worrying enough about Jonah to help him. The Break begins with Stella, a woman who witnesses a violent crime from her kitchen window late at night. Through alternating narratives, the author takes the reader through the lives of those connected with the victim, shining a light on both the violence and struggles within Winnipeg’s North End neighborhood.associatedDomainLogoutUrls": ["https://www.centerparcs.co.uk/services/uxp/logout?resource=/etc.clientlibs/centerparcs/clientlibs/main/resources/images/ui-icon-logout-1x1.png","https://www.centerparcs.ie/services/uxp/logout?resource=/etc.clientlibs/centerparcs/clientlibs/main/resources/images/ui-icon-logout-1x1.png","https://www.aquasana.co.uk/services/uxp/logout?resource=/etc.clientlibs/centerparcs/clientlibs/main/resources/images/ui-icon-logout-1x1.png","https://www.aquasana.ie/services/uxp/logout?resource=/etc.clientlibs/centerparcs/clientlibs/main/resources/images/ui-icon-logout-1x1.png"], When I first saw The Break at the bookstore it caught my interest but I decided against it as it had a trigger warning for violence. I can be sensitive to violence however knowing in advance it does take some of the sensitivity away. I saw it again at the library and knew then that I was going to have to read it. It was definitely a good read for me. I felt that Katherena Vermette handled the violence well and is so well written that I didn't feel sensitive towards it at all. Here's the thing with Break. First off it's a great read. The language is wonderful and the timing is great. I think this is young adult novel. That thought is neither here nor there but I thought I'd state it anyway. The pacing is almost spot on as well. Aside from that the author seems to be wise beyond her years. Hannah Moskowitz does a great job adding interesting information to the story at times when you don't expect it. Refreshing. This is a clever read as well. Our protagonist, is clearly defined with memorable attributes. The Wisdom of a Broken Heart: How to Turn the Pain of a Breakup Into Healing, Insight, and New Love by Susan Piver How does one critique a book that has either won or been a finalist for every literary award in the land, is dubbed an Indigenous novel, and is the debut offering of a young writer positioned for great things in the literary firmament? Answer: Very Carefully. And yet no writer should be spared the observations that hopefully make for better work in the future. So, with that in mind, and mindful that I may also be the object of hate mail, let me try to do justice to this novel.

Numerous pop-culture references and in-jokes cut into the timelessness of the novel and broke immersion. Jeremiah’s voice felt like an attempt to combine the rugged lone survivor with the flippancy of Deadpool. This does provide a nice counterbalance to the typical intensity found in zombie media, but it does not do enough to take away from his character weaknesses and, more than once, furthered my dislike for Jeremiah. You must vacate your lodge by 10am on your departure day and are welcome to stay on village until midnight So despite the whole thing being slightly convenient, it's a great story with tons of action. The pacing is great. Just about the time you think things are going to be fine, they go crazy again. This main character has guts, I'll give him that!He also seems to know how to do a lot of things that he otherwise wouldn't have in his life before the apocalypse. Still, this disbelief is easy to suspend in light of the fact that he's had a couple of years to learn how to adapt. Some people just do well with that. Ultimately, I don't feel like things were really resolved at the end. Jonah may have agreed to stop breaking himself, but the family was still so screwed up, and didn't seem to be reaching for any kind of improvement. Sounds pretty dark, foreboding and like so many other post-apocalyptic tales, right? UM..NO…because Jorge Sanchez has a keen sense of humor that is both dry and as hilarious as survival against all odds by an average “Joe”named Jeremiah can be!
