About this deal

The word of the LORD came to me: “What do you see, Jeremiah?”“I see the branch of an almond tree,” I replied.

Which is it? Does the tree exist by nature or not? Is the tree’s act of being identical to its nature or not? The answer is, “not!” How do we know this?

This wonderful picture book explores themes of empathy, mindfulness and personal growth through the eyes of a child. This wonderful picture book explores themes of empathy, mindfulness and personal growth through the eyes of a child. Beautifully written and illustrated by the award-winning artist Emma Carlisle, What Do You See When You Look At a Tree? urges readers to reconnect with nature by asking questions that encourage critical thinking and reflection on their own development, as well as helping to establish a deeper appreciation for the environment and their place within it. Stunning watercolour and hand-finished artwork draw s parallels to the bestselling The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse, and evokes the classic nostalgia of E. H. Shephard's much-loved Winnie-the-Pooh. Let’s say Cause 2 itself doesn’t have existence by nature but would have to derive existence from something outside itself. If this were the case, then we would have a series of instrumental existential causes and no proper cause from which the instrumental causes can derive their existence—that is to say, a cause that doesn’t derive existence but has it within its nature to give. If there is no proper cause from which Cause 2, and consequently Cause 1, can derive its existence, then the tree wouldn’t exist.

I was particularly pleased to see the last two spreads that explain simply how trees communicate with other trees in the area, and also the final spread that encourages the reader to become more like a tree – by taking your time, and self-care amongst a whole list of other vital activities. I can see this being a favourite – either just to enjoy the glorious pictures or to use the book as the basis for discussions on how readers could be more like a tree – a wonderful mildly philosophical exercise! Fraser Fir - a tall, slim shape and green ‘needle-last’ needles that don’t drop easily, ideal for smaller spaces.Note: The question of whether there can be instrumental causes of sheer existence has no bearing on the argument. For an in-depth treatment of this issue, see my article “Between Existence and Annihilation” in Catholic Answers Magazine, July-August 2016). To infinity and beyond Now the word of Yahweh came to me saying, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” And I said, “I see a rod of an almond tree.” Growing real Christmas trees provides jobs in rural areas, where employment can be hard to come by.
