About this deal

It was simple enough to understand the history behind the Elites and the Ordinaries, but I couldn't wrap my head around the purpose of the Purging Trials. If the Trials and the opponents within them don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is…completely Ordinary. I don't think it was a good idea to introduce genocide and oppression without engaging with those ideas properly. I can suspend my disbelief about the girl getting away with being an Ordinary, but I draw the line as using revolution as an aesthetic without real political worldbuilding behind it. For a book very focused on battle and training and soldiers, it does a poor job of explaining how the military works.

And I'm honestly really glad I gave this a try bc i thoroughly enjoyed it- it was a great fantasy romance! Very early on he gets attacked, she saves his life, and because of that she gets picked for this Hunger Games type shit where they have to display how wicked and fucking cool their powers are and has to compete against him and a bunch of other people. And there’s nothing wrong with that, but since that’s clearly not the target audience, it poses a problem. A lot of enemies to lovers nowadays is just insta-love where they're immediately attracted to each other but oh no they're enemies. I was slightly worried that my expectations for this book were too high, especially considering the letdown that was last year's most viral (and controversial) BookTok book that couldn't follow through on its promises.

If I kiss you—really kiss you, like how I've wanted to, how I've waited to—should I expect a dagger at my throat? but that's like a shitty editor problem and overall did not affect the quality and my enjoyment of the story this time, which is why i rated it so high still.

Nothing makes them stand out, and the cute nicknames and tension-filled scenes are rendered pointless thanks to poor execution and bad timing. I will always be drawn to the women that are wholly underestimated and end up coming on top, it’s such an amazing feeling to witness the struggle and the success in these type of situations. Apparently this was a huge thing on Booktok but i've actually never seen any of the tiktoks and so i'd never heard of this book- until I saw some great reviews recently and it sparked my interest.

though they don’t detract directly from the storyline, noticing one always pulls me out of a book a bit.

The worse of it all is that Prince Kai—the male lead—claims to be a monster (because it’s a first-person narration) to then spare the life of a little girl because ‘he doesn’t kill children’.also finally a strong mc who isn't annoying half the time and making stupid decisions just for the plot. Kai and Pae’s back and forth banter/flirting had me literally squealing like a hot pig on the Fourth of July. This book took a fresh spin on those stories, combining them with some of my other favourite tropes from books like Defy The Night and Shatter Me. I think if Roberts stops limiting herself to copying things that have been done, and pushes herself to develop something new and something that is truly hers, she can do well. If the Trials and the opponents within them don't kill her, the prince she's fighting feelings for will if he discovers what Paedyn is.
