About this deal

Bad Gays is a welcome corrective to the shallow version of gay history as an uncomplicated narrative of heroic struggles by heroic gays. With a title like ‘Bad Gays’, you’d expect a juicy rundown of a rogues’ gallery of horrible people who just happened to be gay. While they are sympathetic to their subjects individually – even the murderers – they are much more critical of the white gay identity their legacies have helped to form.

A dark gray cell indicates that the character was not on the property or that the character's presence on the property has yet to be announced. But how do we approach the sticky subject of the gays of history who, perhaps, aren’t so worthy of celebrating? Amusing, disturbing and fascinating, Bad Gays puts centre stage the queer villains and evil twinks in history. This book covers so much history, especially for Europeans and English folk, that our historians usually try to hide or barely mention beneath piles of text. Oviously the story is also inspired by the various Ocean's 8/ 11/ 12/ whatever-movies, but it is definitely an over-the-top-version of these caper movies. Often speaking in jive, he prefers not to wear clothing, which causes confusion for the rest of the team.

Lemmey and Miller draw a link between this type of homosexuality to the contemporary “Masc 4 Masc” culture that exists on dating apps like Grindr. But "The Bad Guys" turned out to be a very clever movie, well-made, with a sophisticated script, and fast-moving. Because, if you're comparing Oscar and Bosie, for example, I think most people would agree that the former was more morally questionable than the latter, or at least the surviving documentation certainly suggests that. And I think they do this very well - from the AIDS crisis to racist anthropology to the Congo to far right politics, the authors raise again and again the awful harm white queerness has caused, and it’s legacy continues to cause, across the world. Scrolling through the episode list of the podcast, I am left wondering why the authors chose who they did to include in the book.My three worst people in the book are Ernst Röhm, who Laurie Marhoefer provocatively claims is the world’s first openly gay politician. Shark, the main characters in author and illustrator Aaron Blabey's The Bad Guys graphic novel series. Currently binge-listening the podcast - I mean, episode 1 already references Klaus Theweleit, and the show goes on citing tons of sources, so it's super scholarly, but also evidently relevant and damn interesting. All this aside however, Bad Gays can surely boast being one of the most original queer history books of recent years, and something that is sure to garner much conversation and debate.

But the very tools he developed to study other cultures were also used to show the flaws in his work and develop new ways (clearly it has escaped the author's notice that a definition of any scientific theory is that it is disprovable). The film is slated to stream in the United States on the Peacock streaming service 45 days after its theatrical release, [11] followed by its Netflix debut after Peacock's 4-month exclusive window. We spoke with Ben Miller, co-author of Bad Gays, a new book on the dark side of queer history, from serial killers to sociopaths.I also very much appreciated the emphasis and exploration of how our understanding and the concept of homosexuality and queerness has adapted and changed over the years, but how it can still be linked back to the understandings of the Greeks and Romans, the Weimar Republic, the colonial anthropologists et al.

Whether they're breaking 200 dogs free from the Maximum Security City Dog Pound or saving the world from Dr. Are readers really astounded that king James VI and I of Britain, Frederick the Great of Prussia and the Roman emperor Hadrian chose partners of their own sex? The introduction claims that these "bad gays" prove the "failure of homosexuality," but also that there is no throughline of identity between time periods. Those would be the white, male ones (for the most part; there is one woman in here, Margaret Mead, and one Japanese man, Yukio Mishimi). All those things together form our dissatisfaction with homosexuality, but when we say that, we don’t mean being a faggot. Sam Rockwell, Awkwafina and Anthony Ramos to Star in DreamWorks Animation's 'The Bad Guys' (EXCLUSIVE)".
