About this deal

The improvement isn’t night and day when compared to the 1080p rendering however, more often than not, it truly shines. There’s no doubt whatsoever that every single episode of this series looks better in 4K than it did on Blu-ray, and the later seasons are significantly improved. Right away, when you start listening in comparison to the Blu-ray, you notice a larger, richer, and more enveloping soundfield. It involves one of my favorite characters who usually dresses in red (guess who) that lights a whole army’s weapons ablaze with fire to prepare them to fight the opposing undead enemies in the heart of the night. Episodes four, five and six focus on the quest to unseat Cersei and resolve the question of who will sit upon the Iron Thrown.

But upscales done by a prefessional encoder and with significant extra bitrate on disc are still better than your 4K TV doing it in real time (slightly), and you still gain the benefit of having being re-graded for HDR, which these discs have been. One last thing I had to admire as I revisited the series for this review is just how quickly and effectively it establishes the memorable tone that will endure throughout Game Of Thrones’ subsequent six series. Season 8 has its issues and on the whole was fairly disappointing, but I don’t think it quite deserves ALL of the hate it gets. At which point I should say that while the increase in apparent detail is remarkable, the application of HDR to the picture has an even bigger impact. From a cinematic perspective, this series is shot with a period specific visual aesthetic and that comes through quite naturally in their respective Ultra HD presentations.

Through large surprises, twist season cliff hangers, outrageous deaths, and wonderful romances, Game Of Thrones set the high bar for future tv shows and stories to be told over the course of several years - that is until its final season which is arguably its worst season.

There is also a noticeable lack of diligence when it comes to fulfilling the promise of some of the show’s smaller supporting plotlines in favor simply bringing everything to a neat, tidy and bloody end.

Truth be told unless you’ve been living under a rock the last ten years or trapped in a basement in Cleveland (too soon? The soundtracks retain much of their original essence with the Atmos mixes adding a noticeable increase in scope. While one or two later series (with bigger budgets) of Game Of Thrones top season one for spectacle and story sophistication, there’s something about Season one’s rawness, unflinching brutality, and world-building cleverness that still makes it my personal favorite season to date. Each of them is vying for power, for control of the kingdom’s Iron Throne, with political intrigue, bloodletting, and betrayal a-plenty. The onscreen characters also pop throughout here with three-dimensional delight in direct comparison from their surroundings. With a DVD or a non-BDJ BD then my OPPO can remember where it left off, it's got a memory of like five resumes or something like that? The color palette is quite bold in any lands of Westeros and it is revealed in each season that boasts both earthy tones and magical realms with everything in between to a tee. Fine details in the costumes are both exquisite and quite amazing looking here especially in the furs.
