If you have decided to plant a tree in the centre, then you can use the surrounding soil to add life in different seasons. It’s probably best to have plants that will not fight for space with your tree, so small bulbs and seasonal annuals are fine. We provide a range of square foot gardening plans to suit our range of raised beds. We are always happy to advise on custom plans if required. Elderly gardeners can find tending to ground-level beds difficult, as there’s often a lot of kneeling and crouching required. If you’re worried about tending to your plants as you get older, opt for a taller raised bed. These will require less bending over and allow you to sit on the edge to tend to your plants. You could also invest in a self-watering system if you’re not able to manually water. Accessibility: Finally, you’ll want to consider how easy it will be to access your planter or raised bed for planting, watering, and maintenance. If you have mobility issues, you may want to consider building a raised bed that is tall enough to be accessible from a wheelchair or other mobility device. Annuals: Annual plants complete their life cycle in one growing season and are a great option for adding bursts of colour to your raised flower bed. Some popular annuals to consider include petunias, marigolds, zinnias, snapdragons, and cosmos. Every gardener will have to deal with pests at some point, but if you’ve reached the end of your tether when it comes to unwanted visitors, you may want to think about enclosing your garden beds. Go for tall mesh walls to keep pets, deer and foxes out of your flower beds.If you have garden furniture which needs a new lease of life, upcycling wood is a low-cost option to fit in with your budget garden ideas. Wooden raised bed kits are available in a wide range of sizes. There are kits to suit a large rural garden as well as a smaller suburban or urban vegetable garden. We have several standard sizes, the most popular being the 6ft x 3ft or 6ft x 4ft raised bed. We recommend a width of no more than 4ft to allow easy access from each side of the bed, with 3ft being the most comfortable working width. Remember, a big advantage of raised bed growing is the fact that the soil remains light and loose for good root growth. Beds that are too wide will force you to walk on them and compact the soil. When choosing plants for your raised flower bed, consider factors such as the amount of sunlight the bed receives, the soil quality, and the size and shape of the bed.
